Zohran Mamdani, the newly minted mayor of New York City, has announced sweeping taxes on the ultra-rich to make what’s often described as the most expensive city in the US a little more affordable. To describe the level of impact his tax plan will have, Mamdani took an unconventional approach: bringing up Mario Kart.
In a press briefing on April 16, Mamdani (D-NY) was joined by Elle Bisgaard-Church (D-NY) and other board members of the newly established Mayor’s Fund to discuss what the fund will do, who could (philanthropist donors) and should (wealthy elites) contribute, and how this money pot will benefit every New Yorker in every borough. While breaking it down, Mamdani decided that Mario Kart would make a good metaphor to explain it all.

“I like to think of it this way. Government is driving the race car, and philanthropy is there to give it that turbo boost to cross the finish line,” Mamdani said. “Or if you are a Mario Kart fan, government is Yoshi, and philanthropy is the golden mushroom–that edge we need to beat Bowser on the Rainbow Road. To belabor this metaphor even further, Bowser is corporate greed in this scenario.”
What he’s talking about is his hope for the Mayor’s Fund. By tapping philanthropist donors, Mamdani sees a future in which New York becomes more affordable and more livable for the working class, not just the wealthy elites. Part of the plan is the Pied-à-Terre Tax, a first-of-its-kind in New York, where owners of luxury properties (who don’t live in the city but keep their assets in the city) will pay an annual fee that will raise at least $500 million for free child care, cleaner streets, and safer neighborhoods. The other part are those donors, who will be disclosed on an annual basis, according to Mamdani’s office.
This isn’t the first time Mamdani has mentioned video games. He’s a fan of both FIFA 2003 and SimCity 3000, and appears to have spent much of his youth gaming. Bringing up Mario Kart during a press briefing feels much more full circle than just some random metaphor to sound cool. It’s clear Mamdani knows ball.
Mario Kart World is the latest entry in Nintendo’s storied racing franchise. A Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, the game has been heralded as an excellent launch title–even though the console is only getting more expensive.
