Marathon Is Shaped By The Human Soul In A Surprising Way

Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, doesn’t just have a distinctive look; it has a unique sound as well. Several tracks for Marathon have been uploaded in the months leading up to release, and ahead of the game’s full release, Bungie has released a new documentary examining the ethereal soundtrack produced by composer Ryan Lott and Bungie audio director Chase Combs. The video explores how contemporary electronic influences and human performances were blended to create the sound of Marathon, and you can watch it below.

“I love that feeling of it being both neon and also kind of crusty and falling apart at the same time,” Lott said in the video. “To me, that has a sound. Something that was really inspiring about the concept of the game was that you relinquish your human body for a Runner shell. You hold onto your soul. You take ‘you’ with you, but you leave your body behind. I thought what better way to take the human voice–which is the soul of your person–and transform it into these playable instruments.”

You can also listen to four tracks right now from the game:

  • Rhythm of Writhing Constellations
  • Focused Erasures and Sub-Routine Resets
  • We Stole a Moon
  • Code Race [Extended]

Bungie’s games have been praised over the years for their soundtracks, with Halo and Destiny being standout examples. Infamously, Destiny even had a promotional video featuring Paul McCartney of The Beatles, as not even the collapse of human civilization in the far future could erase his voice. You should watch it, because maybe you’ll be amazed (sorry).

So far, Marathon doesn’t have any famous singers announced for a one-off collaboration–yet–but it does have an open beta that will kick off on February 26 and run through March 2. PlayStation users will earn special weapon charms for the full game if they take part in the server slam, and rewards are also in the pipeline for PC and Xbox Series X|S players.

After being hit with a lengthy delay last year, Marathon is now on track to launch on March 5 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
