WWE 2K24 servers are shutting down on March 31, meaning WWE fans are running out of time to get the full value out of the game. WWE 2K24 launched in 2024 and earned mostly positive reviews. It was generally seen as another step in the right direction after WWE 2K22 regained trust in the franchise and 2K23 took things to the next level.
Like the vast majority of modern sports games, WWE 2K24 is stuffed full of online content. It’s got its fair share of divisive online content like microtransactions, but it also allows players to download user-generated content to enhance their WWE 2K24 experience. WWE 2K24 features its fair share of online multiplayer modes as well, so to rip that away would cause significant damage to the game. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening on March 31.
WWE 2K25 Shutdown Date Revealed
Just over six months after launch, WWE 2K25 publisher 2K Games announces when the wrestling sim’s servers will be shut down.
When is WWE 2K24 Shutting Down?
The WWE 2K24 servers are shutting down on March 31, meaning all the game’s online content will effectively be unavailable from that point forward. This means that WWE 2K24 players will no longer be able to play online multiplayer matches or download anything from Community Creations. WWE 2K24‘s offline game modes will still be available, but it’s still a shame that its online functionality is being sunset a mere two years after its release. The sad thing is, WWE 2K fans are likely used to this quick turnaround on game shutdowns at this point.
WWE 2K Server Shutdowns Are Nothing New
WWE 2K22 was released on March 11, 2022, and it didn’t even make it to the two-year mark before all its online functionality was shuttered. That game’s servers were sadly shut down on January 3, 2024. Its successor, WWE 2K23, suffered a similar fate, with its servers shut down a couple of months shy of its two-year anniversary. This means that WWE 2K24‘s online servers are lasting at least a little longer than 2K22 and 2K23, but it’s still hardly anything to write home about.
Online functionality being shut down so fast for the WWE 2K games is likely due to issues like expiring licenses and the desire to move on to the newer games in the franchise. Indeed, after WWE 2K24 is shut down on March 31, WWE 2K25‘s online servers will remain online, as will the servers for WWE 2K26. WWE 2K25 online will remain up and running until March 31, 2027, though, so fans have a little over a year to get what they want out of those modes.
A server shutdown date for WWE 2K26 has yet to be announced, but if it follows the established pattern, it will be shut down on March 31, 2028. WWE 2K26 reviews have made it the lowest-rated WWE 2K game since WWE 2K22, though it has still enjoyed a mostly-positive reception from criics. Regardless, it’s always a bummer when a game’s online servers are shut down, and one has to wonder if WWE 2K fans are ever going to start second-guessing whether they should buy the games or not when they’re virtually guranteed to only have access to major features for a two-year period.
It’s not just the main series WWE 2K games that are getting shut down. It was also confirmed that WWE 2K Battlegrounds is shutting down on July 9. WWE 2K Battlegrounds is an arcadey spin-off with over-the-top character models and fantastical action not found in the more simulation-based main series games. WWE 2K Battlegrounds launched all the way back in 2020, so its online shelf-life is a lot longer than the WWE 2K games, but it’s unclear why that is. In any case, WWE fans that want to play these games online are running out of time to do so.
