Marvel’s Wolverine Actor Apparently Terrified Everyone, So We’re Good

One of the most intriguing parts of Marvel’s Wolverine is getting to see a brand-new version of Logan, and Liam McIntyre’s portrayal of the beloved mutant is apparently “terrifying.” Marvel’s Wolverine is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and getting to revisit the character in a new light is incredibly exciting. Developer Insomniac Games already has two great Spider-Man games under its belt, so it’s going to be fascinating to see what the team does with a character who is much darker and angrier than Peter Parker.

Insomniac has been revealing a lot of new Marvel’s Wolverine details lately. Some of the most exciting surprises have been confirmed Jean Grey and Sabretooth cameos, while features like the ability to customize the game’s gore level gives it the chance to be a more accessible game. Hugh Jackman’s performance as Wolverine has been the most well-known interpretation of the character for over two decades now, and Liam McIntyre could bring something fresh and unexpected to Marvel’s claw-wielding mutant.

Marvel’s Wolverine Is Right to Bring Back X-Men Origins’ Nastiest Idea

Marvel’s Wolverine is bound to take influence from many Wolverine stories, but one feature is a clear callback to X-Men Origins.

Liam McIntyre’s “Terrifying” Wolverine Performance Bodes Well for Insomniac’s New Superhero Game

Marvel's Wolverine Mad at PlayStation

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, McIntyre revealed that his team called his Wolverine performance “terrifying” when he first let loose and gave into the character’s staple rage. One fascinating detail that McIntyre shared about the process is that his “feral Logan” mode was inspired by rabid dogs. One of Wolverine’s defining characteristics is his intense anger, so looking to something as scare-inducing and visceral as rabid dogs for inspiration sounds like a solid call on McIntyre’s part.

Marvel’s Wolverine‘s narrative director Walt Williams has also praised McIntyre’s portrayal, saying, “Liam has delivered one of the most raw and honest performances I’ve ever seen in this medium.” The various trailers and gameplay footage that Insomniac has shared so far has showcased a little bit of Liam McIntyre as Wolverine, but gamers have yet to see just how deep he goes as the character. Being hailed as “raw” and “terrifying” is an incredibly promising sign, though.

I guess that’s good, right? Being terrifying. But, suddenly, I was like, ‘I’m really scared to go all out with this,’ but they’re such a good team that you feel safe. They will help me if it’s not gonna work. They will tell me. They won’t just let it happen. So I got to take some really huge swings with my character as a result of being able to trust them so much.

Wolverine Is One of Marvel’s Most Intense Characters, and McIntyre’s Performance Is the Key to Showcasing That Brutality

In many ways, Wolverine’s lore feels more like a horror story than a run-of-the-mill comic book arc. From being tortured in the Weapon X program to the end result of that torture cursing him with a power that makes him a killing machine, Wolverine’s story is Marvel Comics’ very own version of a body horror tale. That needs to be terrifying and gut-wrenching, and hearing that McIntyre presented a spine-chilling portrayal of the character is a sign that he understands what makes Wolverine such a compelling character.

I got to take some really huge swings with my character as a result of being able to trust them so much.

Hugh Jackman’s version of Wolverine definitely got the toughness of the character down, but he wasn’t exactly terrifying. An exception can be made for his performance as X-24 in Logan, though. Jackman definitely brought the terror when it comes to that specific moment. If McIntyre can bring that quality to the character of Wolverine and not just a clone, then Insomniac’s game might potentially do an even better job at exploring the character’s complexity than Hugh Jackman did in the movies.

Logan is a character that is constantly struggling with his animalistic side and his humanity. He fears the horrible things that he’s capable of, and it’s one of the many reasons why he’s considered one of the most beloved Marvel characters. Iconic Marvel staples like Peter Parker are fantastic, but Logan is a far more layered character. He’s a walking gray area, and that’s a more honest reflection of what a superhero-filled world would actually be like. Marvel’s Wolverine‘s gameplay footage has already promised a game that looks incredibly fun and brutal, and it’s thrilling that McIntyre’s performance could be the key to making the game an even stronger adaptation of Marvel’s most complicated mutant.
