Insomniac Games confirms that one of the more divisive elements of the previous Spider-Man games won’t be happening again inside of Marvel’s Wolverine. The fall release schedule is stacked with new games, many of which are attempting to avoid the impact zone of GTA 6 in November. Despite the crowded schedule, Insomniac’s upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine remains one of the more highly anticipated titles for PlayStation fans.
Over the past months, Insomniac has continued to share more details on its upcoming game, including revealing a ton of familiar characters inside of Marvel’s Wolverine. In fact, during June’s State of Play event, fans saw an extended gameplay segment that included the appearance of Jean Grey. While helping Logan defeat the cybernetically enhanced Reavers, the trailer also showcases even more characters like Omega Red, Mystique, and Sabretooth. Additional footage has since shown Jean Grey again in more story-heavy segments, which has seemingly set off some alarm bells for some fans of Insomniac’s superhero work.
Logan Is The Only Playable Character in Marvel’s Wolverine
In a recent interview, senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed and head of technology Mike Fitzgerald were asked specifically about these character heavy moments and potential teases for more playable characters. The pair left no doubt about what players can expect, confirming that “Wolverine is our only playable character.” They went on to confirm that the studio’s focus is squarely on Wolverine as a character and making sure they nailed that experience.

While Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 let players switch between Miles Morales and Peter Parker, both games in the series surprised players with another playable character. Mary-Jane Watson was featured in stealth missions in both Spider-Man games, a surprising twist that took many fans by surprise during the story campaigns. While these missions were relatively short and didn’t happen a lot, they proved to be divisive among players who didn’t enjoy being pulled out of the superhero experience for something a bit less exciting. Naturally, with the appearance of Jean Grey, there were some who were apparently wary of something similar happening, briefly shifting the focus from Logan to an alternative character.

As it stands, it appears that Insomniac is going all in on giving players the ultimate Wolverine experience instead. However, as fans know, it won’t be a solitary experience as Logan will be joined periodically by partners like Sabretooth, Jean, and Mystique. Outside cinematic story moments, these partner characters in Marvel’s Wolverine appear to operate independently during big combat sections, though they’ll team up with the player during certain combos and special attacks.
It isn’t the first Spider-Man theory to be debunked, however. Considering both Spider-Man games and Marvel’s Wolverine technically exist within Insomniac’s 1048 Marvel Universe, fans were naturally curious to know if there would be any sort of crossover happening. Creative director Marcus Smith shot down the theories and rumors by confirming that Spider-Man won’t be appearing in Marvel’s Wolverine at all. However, Insomniac does have a good track record for Easter eggs, so it stands to reason that there will be more than a few references for players to keep an eye out for.
