Marvel’s Wolverine’s Most Controversial Feature Is Basically Genius

Marvel’s Wolverine’s Most Controversial Feature Is Basically Genius

Insomniac Games revealed a surprising detail about Marvel’s Wolverine recently when the developer confirmed that the game features the ability to toggle its intense violence on and off. It’s already been made clear from the various trailers and gameplay previews that the violence in Marvel’s Wolverine makes it feel worlds apart from the developer’s far more wholesome Marvel’s Spider-Man series. Marvel’s Wolverine‘s violence customization offers players a variety of presets that limit the amount of blood and gore that fans are subjected to, which could run the risk of being controversial.

Hearing about violence customization features like this can sometimes inspire worries about censorship. This isn’t the case with Marvel’s Wolverine‘s gameplay, though. All the blood, gore, and intense action teased for Marvel’s Wolverine is still intact, but Insomniac Games has simply given gamers a chance to tailor their experience how they see fit.

Marvel’s Wolverine: Sabretooth Needs to Be More Like Doc Ock, Less Like Venom

Marvel’s Wolverine brings Sabretooth into the story, and his presence hopefully feels more like Spider-Man’s Doc Ock than Venom.

Marvel’s Wolverine’s Customizable Violence Is a Genius Compromise That’s Worth Celebrating

Considering Wolverine’s notorious reputation as an aggressive, short-tempered anti-hero who is known to be incredibly stubborn in a fight, it only makes sense for Insomniac to add plenty of violence to its gameplay. However, the developers are also fully aware that not every superhero fan is into seeing super graphic violence during combat encounters. Marvel’s Wolverine‘s violence settings are a great way to deal with this issue, because it offers the best of both worlds.

For a lot of Wolverine fans, a game adaptation that isn’t incredibly violent would simply feel wrong. Logan does have ultra-strong knives that come out of his knuckles, after all. However, some of the best Wolverine stories (whether it be in comics or movies) have ranged from being mature and intense tales to narratives that land more in the PG-13 camp. All have their own merits, and the violence toggle that Insomniac Games has implemented is embracing both audiences.

A handful of classic X-Men characters have been confirmed to be part of the Marvel’s Wolverine cast. Iconic mutants like Jean Grey, Mystique, Sabretooth, and Omega Red are going to have various roles in the story. It has yet to be revealed if other major X-Men characters like Professor X and Magneto will be featured in cameos, but it’s definitely possible.

When the game launches, there are bound to be more purist players who think the game should be experienced without making any gameplay changes, since that is the developer’s intended vision. That’s fair, but offering a few doses of gameplay flexibility when it comes to Marvel’s Wolverine‘s violence helps make it an enjoyable experience for all kinds of gamers.

Making the Violence in Marvel’s Wolverine Optional Means a Bigger Audience

A huge reason that Insomniac’s violence settings are such a smart move is because it can also maximize the number of sales that Marvel’s Wolverine is able to rack up. Mature-rated games already risk having a smaller audience unless the game is expected to be a huge launch like GTA 6‘s release date. Insomniac’s game is indeed going to be a big release, but its rating will likely keep some at bay. However, the devs have found a way that can still make Marvel’s Wolverine accessible to younger gamers.

Marvel’s Wolverine’s Violence Customization Turns the Combat From “M for Mature” to “T for Teen”

Even though interest in superhero stories span generations, Marvel Comics adaptations are still something that draws a lot of attention from teens and kids. Adding more accessibility options to the gameplay means that parents are bound to be far more willing to let their kids play Marvel’s Wolverine, despite the rating. It’s important to mention that the customizable censorship won’t make the game completely violence-free, but it tones down the graphics qualities enough that it makes Marvel’s Wolverine fairly tame compared to its base settings.

Everyone deserves to enjoy a good game. Violence toggle users can range from kids to full-blown adults. It doesn’t really matter what age the gamer is, because the customizable presets are completely optional. Of course, this approach can’t work for every kind of game. The over-the-top gore in games like Resident Evil: Requiem is integral to its DNA, but accessibility features like Hogwarts Legacy‘s arachnophobia mode still stay true to the game without making certain players too uncomfortable to enjoy the overall experience.

Hogwarts Legacy takes a really fun approach with its arachnophobia mode. Instead of showing giant spiders, the mode turns them into giant floating orbs that wear roller skates.

Violence Settings in Marvel’s Wolverine Is Also Great News for Streamers and Content Creators

In a world that is now filled to the brim with YouTube and Twitch streamers, adding accessibility features to games that help content creators avoid strikes on their streams and VODs is a great thing to include. Streaming platforms have a long list of guidelines that need to be followed, and slipping up and showing something that gets a video demonetized can put a big dent in a content creator’s income. Violent video games being censored has been a hot topic for years, but offering in-game solutions is a potential key to settling the debate about how much violent content in games is too much.

All the blood, gore, and intense action teased for Marvel’s Wolverine is still intact, but Insomniac Games has simply given gamers a chance to tailor their experience how they see fit.

Insomniac’s Violence Toggle Is Probably a Good Idea for Other Mature Games Moving Forward

Marvel’s Wolverine is far from being part of the list of most violent video games out there, but it’s still a surprising amount of gore for a game that features one of the most popular Marvel characters of all time. Wolverine has had plenty of graphic comic arcs, but Insomniac’s game boasts a level of realism that a comics’ stylized art automatically tones down.

Insomniac taking measures to make sure that Marvel’s Wolverine is able to appeal to a larger audience while still staying true to the titular character’s horror-like claw abilities is a great way to balance graphic themes with accessibility. There’s no way to know if other developers will follow suit when it comes to mature action games, but it’s a feature at least worth taking into consideration. The devs made a calculated move that avoids censorship while still having wide-reaching appeal, and that’s a win.
