Metro 2039 Gameplay Officially Revealed

The upcoming fourth installment in 4A Games and Deep Silver’s post-apocalyptic shooter franchise, Metro 2039, received its first gameplay trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase, demonstrating the game’s even grittier tone and stunning visuals. Metro 2039 is set to return the series to its original gameplay formula following Exodus’s experimental setup, with a distinct focus on its intense, deep story.

Revealed in April 2026, Metro 2039 returns fans to the grim, post-apocalyptic vision of Moscow, based on the novels by Dmitry Glukhovsky. The franchise has been 4A Games’ bread-and-butter shooter franchise since the release of Metro 2033 in 2010, and since then, the series has been widely praised for its deep, intricate stories and impressive visual accomplishments. Recent entries include the well-received Metro Exodus in 2019, which took fans on a more open approach to the series, while the VR-based Metro Awakening found decent success as the franchise’s first venture into virtual reality.

Metro 2039’s Gameplay Reveal Showcases New Characters and Darker Tone

At the Xbox Summer Games Showcase for 2026, fans got a first look at what Metro 2039 has in store for them, with an official gameplay trailer clocking in at just over two and a half minutes. This time around, fans will take the role of The Stranger, a brand-new character replacing series protagonist Artyom, as he grapples with the new Spartan regime spearheaded by the Fuher Hunter. The gameplay trailer gives fans a few tidbits about the Hunter, along with a quick look at the gunplay and the game’s incredibly impressive visuals, now delivering a much grittier tone, as envisioned by the Metro 2039 developers in response to the war in Ukraine. What’s more, Metro 2039 is now slated for release in February 2027 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.

Metro 2039 was rumored for quite some time, and was even alleged to have an entirely different version in production that was eventually scrapped to create the super-grim version of the game fans see today. In contrast to Metro Exodus, 2039 will be taking fans back to a more linear approach to the series, focusing on tight gunplay, heavy atmospherics, and stealth-focused mechanics. Additionally, 4A Games has upped the tension this time around, saying that the surface is as dangerous and deadly as ever after the events of Metro Exodus.

Fan reaction to Metro 2039’s reveal trailer has been positive so far, with many fans blown away by the visuals and excited by the direction for the franchise, following Artyom’s exit from the series. Moreover, fans have been saying that this reveal trailer has them itching to play Stalker 2 and its new updates, which is where Metro‘s roots lie, as former GSC developers left to develop what would one day become Metro 2033.
