Mewgenics Features a Sonichu Cat Voiced by Chris Chan

Mewgenics Features a Sonichu Cat Voiced by Chris Chan

Mewgenics features a massive lineup of celebrity cameos like Hila and Ethan Klein from h3h3productions, but it pays a bit of extra love to one particular fixture of the internet. Chris Chan, the original lolcow, features in Mewgenics as the voice of Sonichu, one of many mutated cats players can recruit to their squad.

For those out of the loop on Chris Chan, it’s frankly impossible to summarize the story of one of the most documented people in history with just a few sentences. Giant pickles, impersonators with names inspired by the Metal Gear Solid series, hilarious music parodies of songs like “I Want It That Way,” petitions to Nintendo to make a game based on Chris Chan’s creation, and sermons about a dimensional merge are just some of the many memorable moments that have come about over the years. Alongside all of this, Chris Chan — now Christine Weston Chandler — produced a hand-drawn comic about her original character Sonichu, a combination between Sonic the Hedgehog and Pikachu.

Which Cats Should You Choose at the Start of Mewgenics?

At the very start of Mewgenics, you’ll need to choose two cats from a selection of three. But which should you choose? Here’s what you need to know.

How Mewgenics Doubles Down on Chris Chan References

The Sonichu comics are enjoyed ironically by many due to their instantly recognizable art style and nonsensical plots that randomly work in bits of Christine’s real life experiences. It seems like Binding of Isaac developer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tyler Glaiel are familiar with Chris Chan lore, as they’ve gone out of the way to pay tribute to Sonichu in their new hit game Mewgenics. This homage is more than just a random bit of dialogue or a static image, though, as players can recruit Sonichu to their squad of mutated cats. And believe it or not, the feline version of the electric hedgehog Pokemon is voiced by Chris Chan herself. It’s certainly strange, but given how weird Mewgenics and its breeding mechanic is, the crossover feels more fitting than one might expect.

Shared on Reddit by Sentinel217, Sonichu can randomly show up as a stray in front of players’ homes in Mewgenics. In the world of “Jesus Christ Chan Sonichu Prime” (and eventually ours, if her long-prophesized dimensional merge actually happens), Sonichu is the strongest character there is. Funnily enough, it seems like McMillen and Glaiel went out of their way to honor this power level, as Sonichu boasts 3 mutations all tied to speed and electricity — natural traits for a character that’s a fusion of Sonic and Pikachu. This yellow, derpy-looking cat would be an incredible reference on its own, but the homage becomes even deeper once players realize that Chris Chan makes all the meow noises for this version of Sonichu. Given how instantly recognizable Chris Chan’s voice is, this is a top-notch Easter egg that will likely leave anyone in the know in tears.

And as if that were not enough, Mewgenics makes a second reference to Chris Chan lore by including the Sonichu medallion Christine has worn for her entire time on the internet. Deemed a cursed item by the internet, any content creator that even jokingly interacts with a version of the medallion seems to eventually have bad things happen to them (idubbz’ recent falloff being an example). While this is obviously more of a joke than anything else, it too has been referenced in Mewgenics, as the Medallion has a special cursed effect. Once worn, it can’t be removed, permanently leaving players with extra electric damage and an increased chance of defecating. It will surely synergize nicely with Sonichu, though, so players should have no issue taking out any hostile cats or “jerkops” that come their way if they pair the medallion with Sonichu.

Not only is Mewgenics a must-play game for fans of the turn-based genre, but it’s clear that lovers of meme culture won’t want to miss out on it either. Based on the comments, the overall reaction to the Sonichu character and medallion being in the game is one of shock more than anything else, as Christine Weston Chandler voicing a character in a successful video game following her recent stay in jail likely wasn’t on anyone’s bingo cards.
