Modern Warfare 4’s First New Map Is Already Making Its Biggest Mistake

Modern Warfare 4’s First New Map Is Already Making Its Biggest Mistake

There is absolutely nothing wrong with revisiting an old favorite, especially when we’re talking about a franchise like Call of Duty. It’s hard to deny that it has some of the most iconic multiplayer maps, and generally the franchise is great for those who just want to jump into a match, get a few kills, and enjoy a familiar environment. However, it seems like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is starting to rely on nostalgia a little bit too early, especially considering that the game launched on October 23 and Shipment was already added as its first post-launch 6v6 map on October 27, 2026.

Many would agree that Shipment is a popular Call of Duty map for a reason. Moreover, it is returning with some visual and gameplay improvements that many players seem to appreciate, but its arrival also raises an important question about the priorities of the studio, especially when players are criticizing the map selection as it is. And although bringing the existing map back is not a bad thing, it doesn’t really address the problems with the maps that are already available. And this is quite the issue considering that map design is very important for multiplayer games.

All Following Orders Choices & Outcomes in COD Modern Warfare 4

In Following Orders mission of the Modern Warfare 4 Campaign, the choices you make change the outcome of the chapter. Here’s each and every one.

Shipment Doesn’t Address Modern Warfare 4’s Biggest Map Design Complaints

Without a doubt, Shipment has enjoyed some popularity over the years, mostly because it wastes no time throwing players into combat. Moreover, its layout is considered to be very compact, so those who prefer to get as many kills as possible are usually happy with the fact that their enemies are almost everywhere and they are pretty close to them. In fact, Activision has also highlighted the effectiveness of Shipment when it comes to earning XP, so the fact that the map is returning is not necessarily something that people will not like. However, many of the complaints surrounding the existing maps revolve around how they only encourage grinding and are generally repetitive.

Of course, it’s important to mention that Modern Warfare 4‘s multiplayer maps are designed with multiple routes in mind, and generally they aim to provide different ways to approach combat. However, Shipment doesn’t really contribute to this goal because its purpose is basically to encourage players to get as many kills as possible, which has nothing to do with the lack of variety in the multiplayer maps. It’s also worth mentioning that Modern Warfare 4 launched with 12 original 6v6 maps. Each one of them has different combat spaces and elevation changes, which means that players have a lot to explore anyway, even though a large selection of maps doesn’t mean that all of them are equally enjoyable.

Shipment has appeared in multiple Call of Duty titles over the years, with different visual themes and environmental changes while retaining its recognizable compact layout.

But this is exactly the reason why the early post-launch period is so important, especially when a certain aspect of the game attracts a lot of complaints. And instead of providing another familiar environment, the studio could have taken advantage of the feedback and introduced a map that at least addressed some part of the issue. The other option would be to just add nothing at this point because it’s been very little time since the release. Sometimes doing nothing for a longer period of time and then addressing an issue is better than rushing and making people think that their feedback is irrelevant.

Nostalgia could be a powerful weapon and get a lot of people to revisit a game, but it shouldn’t be the main reason they continue playing it.

Another option would be to improve an existing layout, which could make a significant difference when it comes to player experience. In other words, even though Shipment gives players another option, it just became one of the many. What is very interesting, though, is that Modern Warfare 4 has already demonstrated its willingness to experiment with multiplayer map design. Let’s take Kill Block, for example, which is a modular battleground that rearranges its environment between rounds, which is quite an unusual approach if you think about it. It has more than 500 different configurations, so players can’t really rely on memorizing the exact same layout or using the same strategy.

Modern Warfare 4 Has Already Proven It Can Experiment With Map Design

To give the studio some credit, the devs have confirmed that they have plans to introduce additional configurations as well, which means that Kill Block isn’t just a one-time experiment. So in this case, it would be an even bigger shame if future map additions focus on bringing back environments that fans are familiar with. At the end of the day, there’s nothing wrong with Shipment returning to Modern Warfare 4 because it’s a recognizable part of the franchise, but when a certain aspect of a game is already facing criticism, it’s important to act accordingly.

Luckily, Modern Warfare 4 has a lot of seasons ahead of it, and Infinity Ward will have plenty of opportunities to introduce original maps and respond to feedback about the ones that already exist. Ideally, Shipment will be just an additional option for players who simply enjoy this popular map. After all, nostalgia could be a powerful weapon and get a lot of people to revisit a game, but it shouldn’t be the main reason they continue playing it.
