Kingdom Hearts 4 finally resurfaced during the June 9 Nintendo Direct, giving fans a new look at Sora’s long-awaited next adventure after years of silence. Square Enix’s next mainline Kingdom Hearts game appeared during the showcase with a brief new gameplay trailer, confirming that it is coming to Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox, and PC.
Square Enix still hasn’t announced a release date for Kingdom Hearts 4, so fans may have to keep waiting a while longer before they can actually play it. Even so, this is easily the biggest update the game has received since it was first revealed in 2022, especially after Square Enix only shared a small batch of new Kingdom Hearts 4 screenshots in 2025.
8 Games You Should Play While You Wait For Kingdom Hearts 4
Kingdom Hearts fans have been awaiting the series’ fourth installment for years. Here are a few games to scratch that itch during the final stretch.
Kingdom Hearts 4 Reveals Gameplay After Years of Silence
Kingdom Hearts 4 was originally announced in 2022 as the beginning of the Lost Master Arc, the next major chapter in Sora’s story after Kingdom Hearts 3. Since then, updates have been rare. Square Enix shared a few new screenshots in 2025, but fans have largely been left waiting for a proper new look at the game. The June 9 Nintendo Direct finally changed that, even if the new trailer still left plenty of questions unanswered.

The new Kingdom Hearts 4 footage once again puts Sora in Quadratum, the more realistic city that was introduced as one of the game’s biggest changes from past entries. The original reveal showed Sora fighting a massive Heartless in the city, and the latest teaser appears to continue pushing Kingdom Hearts 4 as a more cinematic and modern-looking entry for the series. It’s still very much Kingdom Hearts, but the game’s setting and visual style make it feel like a major step away from the worlds fans spent most of the Dark Seeker Saga exploring.
For Nintendo fans, the biggest part of the reveal may be the confirmation that Kingdom Hearts 4 is coming to Switch 2. The Kingdom Hearts series has technically been available on Switch before, but those releases were handled through cloud versions, which made them a difficult sell for players who wanted native versions of the games. Kingdom Hearts 4 coming to Switch 2 suggests Square Enix is treating Nintendo’s new system as a proper home for the next mainline entry.

Square Enix also had more news about the franchise during the Direct, as the first three Kingdom Hearts games are being bundled together for Switch 2 on October 8. A demo for Kingdom Hearts 3 is available now as well, giving Switch 2 players a chance to try the series ahead of the new collection’s launch. For a franchise that has spent years staying quiet, the Direct gave Kingdom Hearts fans several reasons to start paying attention again.
Kingdom Hearts 4 is still without a release date, even after today’s showcase, and Square Enix hasn’t revealed how much of the game’s Disney lineup, combat system, or story will be shown next. Even so, the June 9 Direct finally gave the long-awaited sequel the spotlight again. After four years of waiting, Kingdom Hearts 4 no longer feels like a distant announcement sitting somewhere in Square Enix’s future plans and fans, at long last, have something a little more concrete to look forward to.
