New Narrative-Driven Annapurna Interactive Game is Coming to Xbox Game Pass

Annapurna Interactive has confirmed that the long-awaited title Forever Ago is set to join the massive library of Xbox Game Pass this fall. This release is a major addition for fans of deep, emotional storytelling who enjoy titles that prioritize atmosphere over action. The game follows a man named Alfred who decides to pack his life into a van and head north to find some peace of mind after a life-altering tragedy. The project looks to be a quiet meditation on the human condition that shouldn’t be missed by Xbox Game Pass subscribers as they look for their next great digital adventure.

The journey to get this game into the hands of players has been a marathon for the small team involved. It was first revealed to the public back in the summer of 2020, and since then, the community has been keeping a close eye on any updates from the developer, Third Shift. This studio is a tiny, two-person operation founded by best friends who wanted to focus entirely on telling meaningful stories that resonate on a personal level. Later, in 2022, the game got a much bigger spotlight during an official Annapurna Interactive showcase. Despite the lengthy gap between its first announcement and its actual release window, the excitement has remained high because Annapurna is known for picking up artistic games that are high-quality and often become cult classics.

Surprise New Day One Xbox Game Pass Game is Coming on March 31

Xbox Game Pass subscribers suddenly have a brand-new day one game to look forward to at the end of the month.

Forever Ago is Coming to Xbox Game Pass

During the Xbox Partner Preview on March 26, Annapurna and Third Shift showcased the new road trip narrative that is coming to Xbox Game Pass. Forever Ago centers around Alfred, an older gentleman who finds himself at a crossroads after a devastating event. Alfred has spent his long life building deep connections, but the recent loss of one of his closest companions has left him reeling and searching for answers about what comes next. This unfortunate event pushes him to leave his old life behind and embark on a solitary road trip through various landscapes, each of which helps him reflect on his youth and his current life. It is a story that dives deep into very heavy emotions like regret, broken dreams, and grief, but it also balances those out with themes of courage, hope, and the value of genuine friendship. As Alfred travels further north, he isn’t just looking at the scenery; he is searching for a way to make sense of his loss and find some form of redemption.

Forever Ago is a single-player adventure that mixes exploration with light puzzle-solving. Players will guide Alfred through a variety of stunning environments, ranging from quiet forest trails and peaceful lakes to hot, dusty deserts and towering mountains. Along the way, they’ll examine objects left behind by others to piece together the history of the places they visit and the people who lived there before them. One of the core mechanics involves an old-fashioned instant camera that Alfred carries with him at all times. Players can snap photos to document the trip and save memories, but these pictures also serve a practical purpose for solving environmental puzzles that block their path. Between these moments of quiet reflection, they’ll also meet various strangers who have their own struggles and beliefs, many of whom might even become new friends for the lonely traveler.

The overall feeling of the game is meant to be warm yet melancholy, often drawing comparisons to other narrative hits like Firewatch, Gone Home, or What Remains of Edith Finch. To help build this atmosphere, the developers have recruited some heavy hitters from the world of game audio. The soundtrack is being composed by Clark Aboud, the same person who created the music for Slay the Spire and Kind Words. On top of the beautiful music, the characters are being brought to life by legendary voice talent that fans will surely recognize. Cissy Jones, who fans will recognize as the voice of Delilah in Firewatch, is part of the cast, along with Dave Pettitt, who narrated the emotional journey of Valiant Hearts.

Fans won’t have to wait much longer to see how Alfred’s story ends, as Forever Ago is currently on track for a launch this fall. It will be available on a wide variety of platforms, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam, the Microsoft Store, and Epic Games Store. It is also confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2, and as mentioned above, is joining the Xbox Game Pass lineup. Whether playing on a high-end console or a handheld device, the game promises a nuanced look at what it means to move on after a tragedy. And for those who are wondering about the most important feature—yes, the developers have confirmed that players can indeed pet the dog they meet on their travels in Forever Ago. With its mix of beautiful visuals and a heartfelt script, this project is shaping up to be a standout indie release for the end of the year.
