JRPG fans looking for something to add to their Nintendo Switch 2 libraries will soon be in luck, as Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition launches on Nintendo’s latest console on Thursday, September 24. Dragon Quest 11 S is the second mainline Dragon Quest title to launch on Switch 2 this year, behind the February arrival of Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.
Originally released in July 2017, Dragon Quest 11 tells the story of a protagonist dubbed The Luminary. Alongside his companions, the Luminary is chosen by the world tree Yggdrasil to defend the world of Erdrea from evil monsters. Dragon Quest 11 received a definitive edition, Dragon Quest 11 S, in September 2019. Dragon Quest 11 is considered one of the best mainline Dragon Quest games released so far.
Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition Confirms Switch 2 Release Date
Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition will launch physically and digitally on Nintendo Switch 2 next Thursday, September 24. Like previous ports, Dragon Quest 11 S on Switch 2 is priced at $39.99, with pre-orders now available on the Nintendo eShop and other storefronts. The Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11 S will contain all content from the original Switch port, including the base game and all cosmetic DLC packs. Additionally, Switch 2 players will be able to pick between Graphics Mode and Performance Mode, with the latter rendering the game at 60 frames per second (FPS) in 1080p.

However, the Switch 2 port of Dragon Quest 11 S has a few caveats for players to consider. The Switch 2 version is not an upgrade for players who have Dragon Quest 11 S on the original Switch, as Square Enix is selling it as a separate game altogether. Ergo, save data from the Switch port of DQ11S cannot be carried over to the Switch 2 version. Additionally, physical copies of DQ11S will be sold on the Switch 2’s controversial Game-Key Card format. The Nintendo eShop listing for Dragon Quest 11 S states that Switch 2 players should have at least 23.4 GB of available storage space. By comparison, the original Switch port requires 14 GB. Given that DQ11S will also be priced at $40, it remains to be seen how many players will pick it up.
The Switch 2 port of Dragon Quest 11 S is not the only Dragon Quest title arriving on Nintendo hardware later this year. A spin-off titled Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will arrive on all current-gen platforms on December 3. Like DQ11S, physical copies of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World will ship as Game-Key Cards on Switch 2.
As for the mainline Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams is in active development. Given the popularity of the Dragon Quest franchise among Nintendo fans, time will tell if DQ12 will arrive on the Switch 2 in the future.
