The next major Final Fantasy release is right around the corner, set to drop on Tuesday, August 4. Final Fantasy is one of the biggest and most successful video game franchises of all time, and has been since its start in the 1980s on the NES. Square Enix has kept Final Fantasy‘s momentum going strong by releasin high-quality, critically-acclaimed main series games supported by a seemingly never-ending line of spin-offs.
New Final Fantasy games of some description are released nearly every year. In fact, Final Fantasy fans can look forward to Final Fantasy Resonance releasing in October of this year as an adaptation of the Final Fantasy Brave Exvius mobile game, and we already know Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final installment in the FF7 remake trilogy, is on deck for 2027. There’s another Final Fantasy release coming before those games, and while it won’t be a new experience for everyone, it will be new to millions of Nintendo fans.
Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 Release Date
Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy 14 is releasing on the Nintendo Switch 2 on August 4. Final Fantasy 14‘s Switch 2 port should provide fans with the exact same core FF14 experience that is available on other platforms. This means that fans on Nintendo’s platform can look forward to an absolutely gargantuan MMORPG experience that can keep you entertained for hundreds of hours on end. Final Fantasy 14‘s release on Nintendo Switch 2 should go a long way in making the game more accessible to many more players, but there are some caveats to keep in mind when it comes to the release.

Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 won’t have as strong performance as the more powerful platforms it’s available on, which is to be expected, and it will also take up a staggering 117.2 GB. This gigantic file size is going to be a tough pill to swallow for Nintendo Switch 2 gamers, but for those wanting to experience Final Fantasy 14 on the platform, it may be worth it. Something that will likely keep some existing FF14 players from experiencing the game on Switch 2 is its subscription structure, however.
One selling point for Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 would be the ability of fans that already play on other platforms to have a portable option. Unfortunately, it’s been confirmed that Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 requires an extra subscription to play. This move has left some fans disappointed and understandably so. One concession, however, is that FF14 on Switch 2 doesn’t require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, at least. Still, it’s possible that this move will hurt FF14‘s chances to sell well on Switch 2, though that remains to be seen.
It definitely seems like the Final Fantasy 14 Switch 2 port will mostly appeal to newcomers that have never played the game before, though time will tell if they are sold on it. Still, it’s exciting to see a game as beloved as Final Fantasy 14 have the chance to reach more players, and with the Evercold expansion coming in 2027, there’s plenty to look forward to even if you already play elsewhere.
