New Witcher 3 Expansion Has More to Offer Than Nostalgia

New Witcher 3 Expansion Has More to Offer Than Nostalgia

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has already cemented its place as one of gaming’s most beloved RPGs, and CD Projekt Red is preparing to give players another reason to return to the Continent. Songs of the Past, the upcoming third expansion, will reunite Geralt of Rivia for a new adventure in Letten, the idyllic homeland of bard Dandelion. That already gives me an impression of the expansion, and I’m excited to see what odes, ballads and serenades that we will encounter in Songs of the Past. Scheduled for release in 2027, the expansion is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red and The Witcher 3 veterans Fool’s Theory. The official announcement promises new characters, quests, and meaningful decisions, giving the expansion plenty of room to build on the original game’s legacy.

I feel like the return comes at an interesting time for CD Projekt Red, which is also preparing for The Witcher 4, while its partnership with Blizzard Entertainment brings The Witcher 3 and its new expansion to Battle.net, alongside a Geralt-inspired skin for Diablo 4. Songs of the Past has the potential to do more than keep the bard’s legacy alive. Set in Letten, the expansion promises a new region shaped by rural traditions and lavish festivals, giving CD Projekt Red room to explore fresh folklore and weave new tales into the Continent’s already rich history. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine have already set a high bar for The Witcher 3 expansions, so I’m hoping that Songs of the Past can build on that legacy, without playing the same similar refrain.

Why The Witcher 3 Remastered still tops open-world RPGs: living villages, eerie folklore and gripping monster tales

The Witcher 3’s Legacy Gives Songs of the Past Room to Experiment

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has already demonstrated how much potential lies in expanding Geralt’s adventure beyond the main story. Hearts of Stone introduced the chilling Gaunter O’Dimm and a morally complex bargain, while Blood and Wine took players to the vibrant duchy Toussaint. Both expansions offered more than additional quests, and you could sense the distinct identities through memorable characters and regional traditions.

I think there is a really fresh opportunity here for Songs of the Past, and I’m most excited about visiting Letten, Bard Dandelion’s homeland. The expansion promises an alluring countryside shaped by fertile farmland, bountiful harvests, and lavish festivals. The official announcement trailer blends this medieval splendor with a gruesome reminder of the Continent’s darker side, with its chilling, supernatural forces at play. It definitely reminds me of Toussaint with its colorful fairytale atmosphere, but Songs of the Past can bring more than just a picturesque setting. I’d love the opportunity to explore the local customs and community life in Letten, and a slice of new folklore to add to the Witcher world would be even more appetizing.

Strong Storytelling and Memorable Characters Matters Most for Songs of the Past

For me, The Witcher 3‘s Songs of the Past expansion has an edge by bringing players to a new side of the Continent. With Fool’s Theory co-developing the expansion alongside CD Projekt Red, there is a window here to build on the original game’s established storytelling strengths while introducing something fresh. CD Projekt Red’s official announcement promises the expansion promises that Geralt will reunite with old friends and encounter unfamiliar faces, but I think Dandelion’s connection to the adventure could be just as important as the characters themselves. As a bard, he is a storyteller of both songs and legends, and here lies a unique way to question how the Continent remembers its own history. Balancing familiar characters with this raw thematic direction could help the expansion make an individual mark on the series.

Alongside Songs of the Past’s vibrant atmosphere, the expansion is also expected to introduce a new weapon, the chain, alongside additional combat options, which gives players something new to experiment during Geralt’s monster-hunting adventures. But new mechanics alone will not make this return memorable, as players are already well acquainted with The Witcher 3‘s combat after years of fighting monsters, humans and supernatural threats. As Blood and Wine demonstrated, new content can leave a lasting impression in a different way, through its distinctive setting and memorable characters to help the expansion stand apart from the base game. This gives Songs of the Past a strong example to follow, and though fresh combat mechanics do add variety, I think it’s the characters and narrative choices that will ultimately determine whether this new adventure feels worthwhile.

The Continent Still Has Plenty of Stories Worth Exploring

I think the main thing that gives Songs of the Past an advantage is that the Continent still feels like a world with countless stories left to tell. The original game and its expansions have already taken players through war-torn villages, bustling cities, and fairytale kingdoms, and each region has shown how much local customs, superstitions, and personal struggles can shape an adventure. The Continent’s appeal has never rested solely on Geralt’s main quest, which is one of the reasons the world has always felt so alive.

I think it’s the characters and narrative choices that will ultimately determine whether this new adventure feels worthwhile.

I feel like that ambience gives Songs of the Past the perfect amount of room to explore new conflicts and perspectives, and it doesn’t need to compete directly with the Wild Hunt storyline (or recreate the success of Blood and Wine). It should feel like a natural continuation, especially with its own original collection of side quests, local legends, and morally complicated decisions: that’s what I want to see most. I’ve always felt that one of The Witcher 3‘s greatest strengths is how even an unassuming village can hide a grim story, and this proves that the Continent’s storytelling potential reaches far beyond Geralt, which I hope CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory can harness in Songs of the Past.

Songs of the Past Should Look to the Future, Not Just the Past

Despite the expansion’s title name, what Songs of the Past can do here is augment The Witcher 3‘s world while players wait for The Witcher 4. I’m obviously excited to delve back into the Continent’s dark magic and rich storytelling through Geralt, but this expansion could also bring excitement for the next mainline game. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine each demonstrated how additional stories can expand the series’ identity without losing sight of its identity.

For me, Songs of the Past definitely renews interest in the wider Witcher universe. The Witcher 4 will introduce a new chapter to the story, of course, but returning to Geralt’s story reminds players of why the Continent is so compelling in the first place. Its tangled folklore offers plenty of room for stories that feel both intimate and consequential. Rather than relying on nostalgia alone, Songs of the Past can build on that foundation and give players new memories to carry into the next era of The Witcher.
