A Nintendo Switch 2 owner is sharing their woes in hopes of warning other players after what seemed to be a legitimate cartridge ended up breaking the console. While the Nintendo Switch 2 game was purchased from a site that should have normally sells reputable games, it seems this player received anything but that.
For nearly as long as game systems have existed, fakes of game cartridges and discs have appeared alongside them. In some cases, these fakes end up just being a waste of time and money, but gamers may want to take special care to double-check any games they purchase to ensure that they don’t end up with a much bigger problem than a dud cartridge.
Rumor: Nintendo Switch 2 Getting Critically-Acclaimed RPG
A new rumor claims that Nintendo Switch 2 users will have a new version of a well-regarded RPG to look forward to sometime in the near future.
Fake Pragmata Cartridge Breaks Nintendo Switch 2
On Resetera, a gamer going by the name of jokkir explained that they purchased a copy of new Capcom game Pragmata from Amazon and ended up with a Switch 2 that can no longer read game cartridges. According to jokkir, they found the cartridge for sale in the Amazon Resale category, previously referred to as Amazon Warehouse, which frequently sells items at a lower cost. These items are usually returned or pre-owned, and sell for a lower price as a result. Jokkir thought they were getting a good deal, as the game was $56CAD instead of $80CAD, but when they inserted the cartridge into their system, it didn’t work. Upon trying to eject it, the cartridge got stuck, and they had to pry it out of the Switch 2.

Upon closer inspection, jokkir discovered that the cartridge was a fake. Initially, they believed that the pins had gotten stuck in their console, but once they thoroughly examined it, they discovered that there were no pins to begin with. The cartridge was just a plastic shell with no real “guts” inside. However, as a result, the Nintendo Switch 2 now no longer reads real game cartridges. Any cartridges that they own are now unusable, and while Amazon might refund the purchase of the fake cartridge, it’s highly unlikely that it will take responsibility for the damaged console.
Other gamers have expressed sympathy over the situation, with many saying that from now on, they’ll carefully examine any new Switch cartridges they pick up before trying to use them. Others have warned that problems like these can happen with any sort of reseller, with some reporting that they’ve previously purchased games from Amazon Warehouse that didn’t appear to have been inspected before being put back on sale.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time that a player has shared that they accidentally damaged the cartridge port in their Nintendo Switch 2. Last year, shortly after the Nintendo Switch 2 launched, a gamer decided to customize a copy of Donkey Kong Bananza by spray-painting it yellow. The paint caused the cartridge to jam once inserted, and when he tried to pry it out, the cartridge snapped, leaving part of it stuck in the port. Although Nintendo Switch 2 systems with a damaged cartridge port might still work normally with digital games, losing the ability to read cartridges, especially if one has already purchased a lot of physical titles, is extremely unfortunate.
