Nintendo Switch 2 Getting Critically-Acclaimed RPG

Nintendo Switch 2 Getting Critically-Acclaimed RPG

A new rumor claims that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age is in the works from Square Enix. Since the system’s release last year, Nintendo Switch 2 has seen a number of third-party games offered, including ones that skipped the original Switch. The system has also been getting enhanced versions of games that were previously offered, taking advantage of the improved visuals and performance offered by Switch 2.

Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age was first released in 2017 on 3DS and PlayStation 4, before coming to other platforms. Over the last nine years, Dragon Quest 11 has become the best-selling game in the series. With more than 8.5 million copies sold, the RPG has helped introduce the franchise to players who might not have ever played any past entries.

Nintendo Switch Gamers Have New Free Game They Can Claim Right Now

Nintendo has a new game available right now, and it’s free for all users to claim on the original Switch as well as Switch 2.

Dragon Quest 11 on Nintendo Switch 2

As discovered by users on ResetEra, Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has been rated for Nintendo Switch 2 in Taiwan. While the game was released on the original Switch in 2019, a Nintendo Switch 2 version could offer a number of upgrades over the original. At this time, there’s no way of knowing if Square Enix will offer an upgrade path for existing owners. Some Nintendo Switch 2 games don’t offer upgrade paths, which has been a source of frustration for those who bought the games on the original system.

Ratings board leaks can be a reliable way of uncovering news ahead of an official announcement, and a lot of games have been spoiled as a result. While Square Enix has not confirmed a version of Dragon Quest 11 for Switch 2, fans might not have to wait long to see if this rumor pans out. Dragon Quest Day falls on May 27 each year, and there’s a chance this could be announced on that date. Dragon Quest 11 was temporarily delisted on Nintendo Switch last year, before being relisted on the eShop with Square Enix as the publisher, rather than Nintendo. It’s possible Square Enix made that decision knowing that it would be offering a Switch 2 version in 2026.

Dragon Quest 11 Protagonist

Square Enix has been one of the biggest early supporters of Nintendo Switch 2. While the publisher offered several games on the original system, many of its games would have required too much of a downgrade in performance to be ported to Switch. Now that Nintendo has a more powerful system, the company behind Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy seems to be making up for lost time. Final Fantasy 14 was just announced for Nintendo Switch 2, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released on the system earlier this year.

Dragon Quest 12 is currently in development, but the game seems to be pretty far away from release. A Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest 11 could help to fill the void, and it might attract more newcomers to the series. Dragon Quest is one of the gaming industry’s longest-running franchises, but it still lacks the name recognition of Final Fantasy. Square Enix has tried introducing Dragon Quest to new audiences with its HD-2D remakes, and a new version of a critically-acclaimed entry in the series could help in that goal. For now, fans will have to wait and see if this rumor pans out.
