The open-world pirate RPG genre is poised to make a huge comeback in 2026, with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launching in July, and FromSoftware rumored to be developing a pirate soulslike. However, for pirate game fans looking to try something new in the meantime, Steam has the perfect answer. While Caribbean Legend might look like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag from Temu at first glance, the game promises over 200 hours of content to keep fans busy until Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launches.
For PC gamers, Steam is a treasure trove of hidden gems just waiting for players to uncover. Caribbean Legend is just one of these gems; released back in 2024, the game has only around 1,000 user reviews and hit a peak player count of 1,156 at launch, yet it boasts a “Mostly Positive” review score. The game also offers several DLC packs for purchase to keep the pirate adventure going if players become engrossed in its Caribbean world.

Caribbean Legend is a True 17th-Century Pirate Simulator with Incredibly Deep Mechanics
Sandbox pirate RPGs are a strangely underrepresented genre in the video game world, with Rare’s Sea of Thieves being the most notable modern entry. Caribbean Legend aims to fill the void with one of the most robust experiences pirate fans can expect. The world of Caribbean Legend is completely open, with players free to sail the high seas and explore every island on the map however they see fit. On their adventure, players can traverse a variety of different environments, like caves, pyramids, jungles, and of course, the sea itself.
The Story of Caribbean Legend
In Caribbean Legend, players take on the role of a young French noble named Charles de Maure, who sets out to the New World to join his brother in the Caribbean. Players will get to experience de Maure’s rise from sheltered nobility to pirate lord as they embark on the nearly 200-hour historical fiction pirate RPG story that Caribbean Legend offers. Along the way, de Maure can recruit allies as ship crewmates or as companions for land-based adventures. Players even have the freedom to establish their own pirate colony within Caribbean Legend‘s world.

Having a ship is an important part of Caribbean Legend‘s emergent narrative. Although players start small, they can work their way up to commanding an entire armada of ships. Caribbean Legend also features dozens of different types of ships for players to collect as well, including Frigates and Corvettes, complete with full customization options that rival the Grand Theft Auto series’ vehicle collecting and customizing mechanics.
Caribbean Legend has plenty of optional side features to dabble in as well, such as treasure hunting, gambling, and even romance mechanics.
Combat in Caribbean Legend
Like any good pirate RPG, Caribbean Legend features both naval and land-based combat. At sea, players can command their crew as they go head-to-head with enemy ships, leading them in boarding raids similar to a game like Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii‘s ship combat gameplay loop. Crew management is an important part of this mode, as players will need to properly distribute collected loot to keep their crew’s morale high and stave off a potential mutiny.
Land combat follows a more traditional RPG route, with players building their character to suit their preferred playstyle. There are tons of weapons to choose from, including swords, axes, rapiers, armor, muskets, and pistols. Whether players want to lean into heavy swordplay, musket marksmanship, or even the peaceful, diplomatic route to conflict resolution, Caribbean Legend has them covered. The option to shape their character’s playstyle however they see fit allows players the opportunity to really roleplay their ideal pirate life, whether that’s as an iconic pirate like Jack Sparrow or Guybrush Threepwood, or an entirely original character that’s personal to them.
Caribbean Legend’s Jank is Part of Its Charm
The elephant in the room with Caribbean Legend is its lofi visual style and often strange difficulty spikes late in the game. Graphically, fans of mid-2000s RPGs like The Witcher 1 and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic will likely enjoy Caribbean Legend‘s retro feel. However, players looking for a photorealistic immersive pirate sim will likely be turned off by the dated-feeling graphics.
Gameplay-wise, Caribbean Legend can often feel like it’s pulling more than just its visuals from that same era of RPGs. Combat can get repetitive and jump drastically in difficulty in later stages of the game. Players also report instances of bugs and game crashes, really giving Caribbean Legend a level of jank on par with the PC RPGs of the 2000s. However, for players who can look past some of these issues, Caribbean Legend has a robust offering of deep gameplay mechanics and an engaging story that should keep players invested for hundreds of hours.
