Overwatch Has Bad News for Fans of the Clash Game Mode

Overwatch Has Bad News for Fans of the Clash Game Mode

Overwatch is officially removing Clash from the Quick Play map rotation starting in Reign of Talon Season 1. After the soft relaunch of Overwatch on February 10, the Clash game mode will only be playable in Custom Games.

During the Overwatch Spotlight, Blizzard shocked its fanbase with massive plans for the hero shooter in 2026. Now rebranded back to simply Overwatch, players will see 10 new heroes throughout the year, five of which arrive in the first season, along with a refreshed UI, sub-role passives, and year-long storylines, starting with Vendetta’s hostile takeover in Reign of Talon.

Overwatch Isn’t Just Winning the Fight Against Marvel Rivals, It’s Dominating It

The latest chapter in the rivalry between Overwatch and Marvel Rivals begins, with the former firmly in the lead following its huge spotlight.

However, to make room for all the new stuff, at least one thing is being removed. OW content creator Aspen was invited to the Overwatch Spotlight event, where she asked Overwatch associate director Alec Dawson if there are any new game modes planned for the near future. Dawson not only confirmed Overwatch is “sticking with what’s working currently” and “refining what we have,” but that Clash is being removed from Quick Play next season. Starting February 10, fans will only be able to play Clash in Custom Games and will no longer see it come up in any queues.

Clash is a newer game mode that was introduced in Overwatch 2 Season 12. The mode consists of five objectives where teams must push deeper into enemy territory in order to capture control points, with the first reaching five points winning the game. Unfortunately, Clash matches have a tendency to be fast and one-sided, despite Blizzard’s attempts at balancing. This led to Clash being removed from Overwatch 2 Competitive Play in Season 15, though it remained in Unranked modes, and was added to both Competitive and Quick Play Stadium when they were released in Season 16 and Season 18, respectively.

While Dawson said Clash is being removed from Quick Play in Reign of Talon, his comments about it only being playable in Custom Games imply the truncated version of this game mode will also be pulled from Stadium. Players will have to wait and see when the update arrives on February 10 to be certain.

The only other game mode that was fully consigned to Custom Games in the past was Assault, also known as 2CP, with the launch of Overwatch 2 in 2022. Ironically, both existing Clash maps from Overwatch 2 – Hanaoka and Throne of Anubis – were reimagined versions of the Hanamura and Temple of Anubis Assault maps, making it the second time these battlefields have been exiled from Core Overwatch indefinitely.

Overwatch Is Not Giving Stadium Much Love This Year Either

While the Stadium game mode is still going strong in Overwatch, it is not getting nearly as much attention this year. In the months after the game mode was launched in 2025, Stadium received two to four heroes every season, plus new maps, features, and even the Payload Race game mode. However, the only Stadium content seen on the Overwatch 2026 roadmap is Vendetta, the Hero Builder, and UI improvements in Season 1, and Ramattra in Season 2.

Meanwhile, Core Overwatch is getting tons of features, including the Conquest event in Season 1 and the Japan Night map in Season 3. Indeed, the massive influx of new heroes in Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 1, plus one more promised every season after, actually means Stadium is falling behind on its roster of heroes for the first time since its launch. It is clear that focus has shifted away from Stadium in favor of Core Overwatch for the time being, likely due to its higher player count. Even so, Stadium has not been completely forgotten, so hopefully Overwatch will continue to support it in the future.
