Among the most popular aspects of the hero shooter from Blizzard is its rich cast of characters. Overwatch boasts a sizable roster of more than 50 Heroes for players to choose from, hailing from countries around the world with diverse backgrounds. New Heroes joining Overwatch‘s roster typically come with plenty of story content, including animated shorts, comics, and more, to introduce them to fans. The in-depth storytelling of the shooter’s Heroes has naturally led many fans to ask Blizzard for a full-fledged animated series based on Overwatch. Now, the game’s new creative director may be fit to deliver on those requests.

Overwatch Has A New Creative Director
Blizzard recently announced that Justin Richmond will be taking over as the new creative director for Overwatch. Richmond got his start in the gaming industry in 2002 with Backbone Entertainment, working as an artist on games like MechAssault: Phantom War and Brooktown High. Richmond’s most notable work, however, came with Naughty Dog, working on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and co-directing Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. Richmond spent more than ten years as a part of multimedia studio Wonderstorm, helping to co-create the successful Netflix animated series The Dragon Prince.

Justin Richmond’s role in creating The Dragon Prince and his work on Uncharted has sparked the hope that Blizzard may still have an animated Overwatch series in its sights. Richmond shared his own history with Overwatch as a fan, sharing that the first BlizzCon he attended was the 2014 event when the game was announced. The new director shared an anecdote from the convention as well, claiming that he “looped the line” repeatedly to play the demo and learn how to play Tracer. Richmond also confirmed that he will be in attendance at BlizzCon 2026 in September.
Renewed discussion about an animated Overwatch series comes as the game recently passed a huge milestone. May 2026 marked the tenth anniversary of Overwatch as a franchise, with the original game first launching on May 24, 2016. A special event for the celebration featured 21 skins from the original game’s launch, unique anniversary loot boxes, and special cosmetics created by the development team and community members. Overwatch‘s big celebration even came with an unexpected crossover with Fortnite, one of its biggest competitors.

Alongside Overwatch‘s wealth of in-game rewards, the Blizzard shooter also received a surprising crossover with Fortnite. After months of rumors, Epic Games and Blizzard officially launched a crossover between Overwatch and Fortnite within the battle royale, adding four skins based on some of Overwatch‘s most beloved Heroes. The collaboration even added a pair of iconic Overwatch weapons to Fortnite, with players able to find Tracer’s Pulse Pistols and Mercy’s Caduceus Staff. Overwatch fans have plenty to celebrate the game’s 10th anniversary with, and more exciting reveals are likely in store from Blizzard.
