PlayStation 4 Gets Surprise New Console Update for March 2026

Sony’s last-generation console, the PlayStation 4, has just received a surprising new update on the heels of the PlayStation 5’s latest PSSR update. Upon its initial announcement in 2013, the PlayStation 4 took the gaming world by storm, showcasing a more confident Sony looking to come out of the gate swinging after the slow-burn success of the PS3. After revitalizing that platform, Sony carried its late-life momentum into the PlayStation 4, with a less complex system architecture that made it easier to develop for, alongside a more consumer-friendly direction than its competitor, the Xbox One.

Since its release, the PlayStation 4 has become one of the most successful consoles in gaming history, selling over 110 million units in over a decade on the market. It has since become the second-highest-selling PlayStation platform, trailing only the all-time king, the PlayStation 2, and it currently ranks among the top five highest-selling video game systems of all time. It also boasts a stellar library of games across the first-party, third-party, and independent fronts, many of which can still be experienced thanks to backward compatibility on the PlayStation 5.

PS4 and PS5 Get New System Updates for October 2025

Sony releases new system software updates for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, bringing some minor improvements to both consoles.

Alongside the PlayStation 5’s newly released PSSR update, Sony has also simultaneously rolled out a new PlayStation 4 update. This new update, Version 13.50, is the first PlayStation 4 update released since Version 13.04 in January. Given the console’s age and Sony’s focus on the PlayStation 5, it’s fair to assume that this new update will not include any new substantial improvements or overhauls to the PlayStation 4’s firmware.

The only patch note Sony has released for this Version 13.50 update to the PlayStation 4 indicates that it has “improved the messages and usability on some screens.” The most noteworthy part of this new release is that, unlike previous PlayStation 4 updates, Sony doesn’t mention any “security fixes” this time around. This is usually Sony’s way of indicating that it is fixing common exploits that allow gamers to jailbreak their PlayStation 4 consoles, enabling hacking, piracy, and homebrewing.

Sony’s surprising PlayStation 4 update will likely be one of the last of its kind, as the publisher is focusing much of its attention on the PlayStation 5. Sony has quietly begun phasing out some of the console’s features, including its multiplayer Tournaments and Teams modes, which were discontinued in October. Sony has also announced that it will stop offering PlayStation 4 games as a “key benefit” on its PlayStation Plus service, instead focusing its offerings on dedicated PlayStation 5 titles.

Alongside console features, several multiplayer and live-service games are beginning to end support for the PlayStation 4. HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact ended PlayStation 4 support in August, and reports indicate that this is merely the first domino to fall, with other titles likely to begin phasing out support on the last-generation PlayStation machine. Thus, this new update may very well be one of the final ones that gamers receive on the decade-old PlayStation 4 as Sony focuses all of its attention and resources on the PlayStation 5.
