Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has released a new official statement on the PlayStation 6‘s launch plans, specifically the release date, in a new profile. Interestingly, the PlayStation 6 was not the sole focus of the conversation; instead, the profile discussed moreso discussed Sony’s plans to move away from electronics and more to entertainment, something that is no doubt being spurred on by the ongoing RAM crisis.
As of this writing, there is no known end in sight for the RAM Crisis, which has caused price spikes across the entertainment industry (and beyond). Both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles have gotten even more expensive to produce, and naturally, many are concerned about the PS6 and Xbox next-gen Helix console releasing in 2027. As long-time gamers know, a console generation typically lasts around 6-7 years, so a new console gen would typically launch in late 2027. Between the COVID-19 pandemic, trade issues, the RAM crisis, and everything else, it’s hardly been a typical console generation.
PlayStation Reportedly Not Committed to a PS6 Release Date
All of that continues to impact the upcoming release of the PS6 console, according to a Wall Street Journal interview with Totoki. While many expect the PS6 console to still arrive in 2027, it seems many economic analysts suggest that the PS6 release date has drifted further out because of the ongoing global shortages. The logic is simple: if PlayStation 5 consoles cost at least $600 now, then the PlayStation 6 is no doubt pushing Steam Machine prices. And when the Wall Street Journal asked about the launch plans for the PS6, Totoki reportedly stated that the company still hasn’t fixed a date for the PS6’s launch.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t confirm much. While the WSJ highlights that many expect the PS6 to release in 2027, which still holds true, Totoki is unlikely to acknowledge as much as the CEO until the company is ready to start marketing the release (perhaps late this year, early next, if it moves forward with 2027). However, Totoki’s comments also suggest that the company is not there yet, and so it’s still possible that the PS6 is delayed out of the 2027 release window. There could be many contractual issues for this, but the bottom line is pretty simple: if no one can afford a PS6 at release, no one is going to buy it when they have a PS5 or other gaming device.

Per the WSJ, investors are “eager to know what comes next” out of PlayStation and the video game industry. Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be a massive, seminal release for both PS5 and Xbox Helix consoles, and so that’s no doubt the next major release for investors. Unfortunately, with the ongoing investments in technology related to generative AI, investments in the gaming industry are also drying up.
With the various economic factors at play here, it would not be surprising if PlayStation delayed the release of the PS6, but it does feel unlikely. The chief issue being, PlayStation has likely already made hardware agreements and similar deals that mean the PS6 is currently being made, if not just prepared for 2027. Perhaps that has some wiggle room, but with no end to the various industry issues in sight, there’s also the reality that PlayStation may have to just release the PS6 for those who can afford it.
