PlayStation has announced that it will raise the price of PlayStation Plus starting on May 20, 2026. PlayStation’s subscription service was rebranded as the all-new PlayStation Plus in 2022 and features three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential is the cheapest tier and serves those who just need a subscription to play games online. Extra not only allows people to play online, but also includes a library of hundreds of modern games they can play. Finally, Premium has all the perks of PS Plus Extra, plus access to a selection of classic games.
PlayStation Plus previously saw a price increase following its change in branding. The first PS Plus price hike occurred in 2023, when PlayStation increased the cost of subscriptions by around 35%. PlayStation’s subsequent financial results showed that despite the huge increase in cost for the service, most subscribers continued to pay. The revenue for PlayStation’s subscription service has increased year-on-year, not only due to higher charges, but as more people purchase Sony’s gaming hardware and subsequently sign up for the service. This is likely due to new gaming releases that require online play and an increase in the PlayStation 5’s user base as time goes on.

PlayStation Announces PS Plus Price Hike
On social media, PlayStation revealed that starting from May 20, 2026, the price of PS Plus would increase in a number of regions due to “ongoing market conditions.” The post didn’t name regions included in the upcoming change, outside of India and Turkey, but does show prices in US dollars, euros, and British pounds. PS Plus has increased in price in certain regions before. Notably, these changes in cost are similar to the PS Plus price increases in Latin America that occurred in 2025. However, this rise is likely more far-reaching than previous hikes.
The increase will only affect new PS Plus subscribers, except in Turkey and India, where everyone will be caught up in the change. However, if a current subscriber cancels their subscription or allows it to lapse, then they will need to resubscribe at the new higher price point. PlayStation has only revealed the change in price for the Essential tier, with a month’s subscription increasing from $9.99 to $10.99. This may seem like a small increase, but Extra and Premium subscribers will also see an increase in price that is likely even more significant.

In March, PlayStation announced huge console price increases, with some models increasing by as much as $200. While Sony continues to hike the prices of PlayStation products, its main competitor, Xbox, recently decreased the price of its Game Pass subscription service. Even though it also announced that Call of Duty would no longer be available as part of the subscription at launch, Xbox’s offer is likely more attractive now that PlayStation has announced its price hike.

Unfortunately, it seems that consumers have ended up with the worst of both worlds as prices for both have been raised within months of each other.
