Pokemon Champions Mega Evolution Tier List

Pokemon Champions Mega Evolution Tier List

Competitive teams in Pokemon Champions almost always want to include a Mega Evolution, as this battle gimmick is one of the strongest the series has ever seen. Since Pokemon Champions only allows players to use one Mega Evolution per battle, players will want to be very selective when choosing the creature to add to their team. As such, there are some clear differences that separate the best Mega Evolutions in Pokemon Champions from those that should rarely see play.

Currently, Pokemon Champions only has 60 of the 93 existing Mega Evolutions in the game, and this list will only include those available in the game at this time.

These 21 Pokemon Are Must-Haves For All The Best Teams in Pokemon Champions

Pokemon Champions’ best teams all feature some of these 21 Pokemon, and here’s why you should add them to your roster as soon as you can.

  • Mega Charizard Y
  • Mega Gengar
  • Mega Dragonite
  • Mega Tyranitar
  • Mega Floette

The Pokemon in their tier are the current meta for Pokemon Champions, and are the most likely to be used by players. Mega Charizard Y seems to be the most commonly used Mega Evolution due to its ability to set up harsh sun with its Drought Ability, giving it boosted Fire-Type STAB damage and access to a one-turn Solar Beam, which can counter Water types that threaten it. As such, controlling the weather is key to success in Pokemon Champions, making Mega Tyranitar another meta option for sand teams in Pokemon Champions, since its Sand Stream Ability can start a sandstorm and access to Rock Slide means it can counter Mega Charizard Y quite nicely.

Mega Gengar’s Shadow Tag Ability makes it the Mega Evolution of choice for Perish Trap teams in Pokemon Champions. Mega Dragonite is incredibly versatile, with good bulk thanks to its Multiscale Ability and access to Extreme Speed plus a 100% accurate Hurricane when rain is active. Mega Floette is the strongest new Mega Evolution from Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with its Fairy Aura Ability allowing Light of Ruin to essentially sweep most mons that don’t resist it. However, Mega Floette is also locked behind the $70 Pokemon Legends: Z-A game, so it is not as common as the other meta Mega Evolutions.

A-Tier: Strong Mega Evolutions in Most Situations

  • Mega Kangaskhan
  • Mega Starmie
  • Mega Meganium
  • Mega Feraligatr
  • Mega Gardevoir
  • Mega Aggron
  • Mega Garchomp
  • Mega Froslass
  • Mega Excadrill
  • Mega Golurk
  • Mega Chesnaught
  • Mega Delphox
  • Mega Greninja

Mega Evolutions in this tier will be useful on almost any type of Pokemon Champions team, with some anchoring a specific archetype. For example, Mega Meganium is the perfect anti-weather Pokemon since its Mega Sol Ability allows it to use one-turn Solar Beams and Fire-Type Weather Ball without needing to set up the sun. Mega Froslass is also great for countering opposing weather users with its Snow Warning Ability, which sets up snow and allows it to fire off 100% accurate Blizzards and boost its team’s defenses with Aurora Veil.

Other Pokemon in their tier are crucial parts of their specific team gimmick, such as Mega Aggron and Trick Room teams. Mega Aggron is very slow but has a monster Defense stat, making it perfect to take advantage of the swapped speed priority in Trick Room with a move like Body Press that scales damage based on the user’s Defense stat. Mega Starmie has carved out something of its own archetype with its Huge Power Ability and access to Skill Swap, allowing Mega Starmie to keep its Huge Power-boosted Attack stat or swap it with a partner for a dangerous dual-threat combo.

B-Tier: Mega Evolutions with a Decent Gimmick

  • Mega Venusaur
  • Mega Charizard X
  • Mega Clefable
  • Mega Alakazam
  • Mega Victreebel
  • Mega Gyarados
  • Mega Aerodactyl
  • Mega Scizor
  • Mega Heracross
  • Mega Skarmory
  • Mega Manectric
  • Mega Lopunny
  • Mega Lucario
  • Mega Gallade
  • Mega Emboar
  • Mega Chandelure
  • Mega Hawlucha
  • Mega Crabominable
  • Mega Drampa
  • Mega Scovillain
  • Mega Glimmora

The Mega Evolutions in this tier offer a solid gimmick that can be used effectively in a variety of situations, but don’t really have the overall utility of the Pokemon in the tiers above. A great example of this type of Mega Evolution is Mega Victreebel with its Innards Out ability, which, when knocked out, deals damage to the Pokemon that KO’d it based on the amount of HP it had left at the time. This makes Mega Victreebel a solid mon for taking down high-value sweepers like Mega Charizard Y or Archaludon, but it also is not necessarily worth wasting a Mega Evolution on.

Mega Hawlucha is another popular gimmick Pokemon in Champions, since it has access to Entrainment and the No Guard Ability. No Guard ensures the user’s attacks never miss, but all incoming attacks against it never miss either. With Entrainment, Mega Hawlucha can give its No Guard Ability to a partner like Excadrill, which can use a one-hit KO move like Horn Drill with 100% accuracy. Unlike Mega Starmie, Mega Hawlucha doesn’t have a ton of utility outside this gimmick.

C-Tier: Very Situational Mega Evolutions

  • Mega Blastoise
  • Mega Pinsir
  • Mega Ampharos
  • Mega Houndoom
  • Mega Sableye
  • Mega Altaria
  • Mega Absol
  • Mega Glalie

These Mega Evolutions have gimmicks that are even more situational than the above, but also lack the stats and utility to be useful outside these niches. Mega Houndoom’s Solar Power Ability increases its Special Attack 1.5x in harsh sun, allowing it to surprise sun teams in Pokemon Champions with boosted power. The drawback is that it loses 1/8 of its HP every turn that the sun is active, giving it a clear expiration date.

Mega Sableye and Mega Absol both have the Magic Bounce Ability, which reflects opponents’ status moves back at them. This Ability can be very useful for mitigating moves like Taunt or entry hazards like Spikes and Stealth Rock, but neither of these Megas excel in other areas of battle, and Sableye is almost better when it’s not Mega-Evolved since it has the ability to set up its own status moves with the Prankster Ability. There are better non-Mega Magic Bounce users like Hatterene or Espeon in Pokemon Champions.

D-Tier: Almost Always Outclassed by a Better Option

  • Mega Beedrill
  • Mega Pidgeot
  • Mega Slowbro
  • Mega Steelix
  • Mega Medicham
  • Mega Sharpedo
  • Mega Camerupt
  • Mega Banette
  • Mega Chimecho
  • Mega Abomasnow
  • Mega Audino
  • Mega Meowstic

For these unfortunate Mega Evolutions, there is usually a better option that fulfills a similar role and makes them almost never worth using in Pokemon Champions’s competitive battles. Mega Meowstic is the latest Mega to get outclassed by another, more powerful Psychic-Type Pokemon. Trace isn’t a great Ability for Mega Meowstic to have, and essentially makes it a worse version of Mega Alakazam and Mega Gardevoir.

Similarly, the addition of Mega Froslass has knocked Abomasnow down a peg in usability. Before Pokemon Champions, Mega Abomasnow had the situational gimmick of Snow Warning as its Ability, allowing users to pair it with Alolan Ninetales to quickly set up Aurora Veil. But now, Mega Froslass does the same job but better, meaning there’s never going to be a situation where Mega Abomasnow is the preferable option over Mega Froslass.
