Pokemon Developer’s New RPG Proves Patches Can’t Fix Everything

Yes, post-launch updates can do wonders for a game, especially when it comes to fixing those little tiny annoying bugs and improving the overall performance of the title. However, just because developers are probably doing their best to improve their releases, this is usually not enough to fix every single thing that players dislike. Unfortunately, in some cases, like what happened with Beast of Reincarnation, no matter how many fixes you try to introduce through limited patches, it is simply not enough to save the game.

Beast of Reincarnation was released in August 2026, and it is a single-player action RPG from the Pokemon developer Game Freak. On October 16, 2026, the developers announced an upcoming October 19 patch, which would mark the end of the game’s current cycle of major updates. Sure, the game might receive one or two small improvements here and there, but this will be it. In any case, even if there were more major patches coming our way, it probably wouldn’t have made a real difference, since player complaints are tied to the game’s fundamental design rather than small technical issues that can be fixed after the initial release.

5 Most Perfect Single-Player RPGs Nobody Plays, Ranked

Find out why these perfect single-player RPGs vanished, and why no matter how perfect they are, nobody is playing them today.

Beast of Reincarnation’s Combat Problems Go Beyond Simple Bug Fixes

The combat system of Beast of Reincarnation doesn’t follow the same formula that people are used to seeing in action RPG titles because it combines real-time sword combat with command-based abilities. For example, players earn points for their abilities by parrying enemy attacks, while opening the command menu slows down time. An interesting approach to combat, but it definitely doesn’t mean that everybody is enjoying it.

Many players claim that parrying feels inconsistent because getting hit may leave players unable to parry subsequent attacks in an enemy combo. Moreover, it seems like combat can easily become visually confusing, and enemy encounters can feel quite repetitive. And even though small balancing adjustments might help, changing the entire system fundamentally would probably mean that the developers would have to just start over.

A Patch Can’t Rewrite an Entire Story

Of course, combat isn’t the only thing that matters in an RPG, especially if the title claims to put considerable importance on its narrative. The game follows Emma and Koo, whose relationship is central to the storyline as they uncover the mysteries of the world together, but many have criticized the game’s writing, describing it as dull and emotionless. Moreover, GameSpot highlighted the awkward dialogue and the lack of development in the protagonist’s relationship. Unfortunately, this is another area that conventional patches simply cannot fix; if the story’s too slow, fixing technical bugs will certainly not save it. What could save it, though, is the developers rewriting dialogue, restructuring scenes, and changing the way certain narrative points unfold. That is why relying on smaller patches to fix a game after it has been released may not be the best strategy out there.

Beast of Reincarnation is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It’s important to acknowledge that Game Freak didn’t just releaseBeast of Reincarnationand leave it alone. This is certainly important considering how many abandoned games there are out there, or ones that fix whatever they feel like fixing and don’t pay attention to the changes people are actually interested in seeing. Sure, these improvements will not fix a game that has fundamental issues in the first place, but it definitely shows that the studio is interested in improving, and it could potentially use the feedback to make better games in the future. Nevertheless, the announcement is a reminder that post-launch support can only do so much, and players may have to accept that certain aspects of the game will never change substantially.

Game Freak May Be Better Off Learning From Its Mistakes

In any case, Beast of Reincarnation is a good example of why improving a game and changing how people feel about it don’t necessarily go hand in hand. Sure, the game has received some great updates, but its overall Steam reviews remain mixed, which suggests that improvements have simply not been enough. Which, in the situation of Beast of Reincarnation, actually makes sense since there were some fundamental problems in the first place. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the devs have wasted their time, because technical improvements are still valuable regardless of whether they convince people to give the game another chance, because there are players who enjoy the game in the first place too.

The situation could have been different if Game Freak had been more ambitious with its changes, but considering the rough start of Beast of Reincarnation, maybe it’s better to just take the feedback and make sure you don’t repeat the same mistakes in future releases. Moreover, major changes might alienate people who actually appreciated the original experience, so this is perhaps another reason why the developers have to be careful about how far they’re willing to go when it comes to new patches. Ultimately, Beast of Reincarnation is a reminder that maybe it’s better for a game to spend more time in development than remain a slave to limited post-launch support forever.
