Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch Claim to Have All 151 Originals — Including Mew?

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch Claim to Have All 151 Originals — Including Mew?

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen claim to have all 151 original Pokemon, which implies that there is some way players will be able to get Mew. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were the first-ever Pokemon remakes, launching all the way back in 2004 on the Game Boy Advance as upgraded versions of the beloved Pokemon Red and Blue. Soon, Nintendo Switch gamers will be able to play the games on Nintendo’s latest home console/handheld hybrid to celebrate the franchise’s 30th anniversary.

With Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen dominating sales charts, there’s clearly a great deal of excitement for the classics to make a comeback. However, there’s also quite a bit of confusion. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen‘s once-touted Pokemon Home compatibility has been scrubbed from its listings, leaving it up in the air if it will be a supported feature in the Switch ports or not. Not only that, but fans are also confused about how exactly they will get to encounter Mew, as the Mythical Pokemon is supposedly going to be in the game.

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Version Exclusives Make Which Version to Buy an Obvious Choice

Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are coming to the Nintendo Switch, and the version exclusives make it obvious which one to buy.

Straight from Nintendo’s own website, there is a blurb that states that Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on the Nintendo Switch will let players “encounter the games’ original 151 Pokemon.” Effectively, this would mean that Mew is in the games, but there was never a legitimate way to catch Mew in FireRed and LeafGreen. Back in the Generation 3 days, Pokemon players had to acquire Mew through an event in Pokemon Emerald, and then trade it over to FireRed and LeafGreen if they wanted all 151 original Pokemon.

In these Nintendo Switch versions of the 2004 remakes of the first Pokémon games Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green (originally released in Japan in 1996), players can encounter the games’ original 151 Pokémon.

How Can You Get Mew in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch?

lego mew

It’s possible that an event to get Mew will be triggered in the Nintendo Switch versions of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, like one of the classic Pokemon distribution events from back in the day. Alternatively, maybe such an event will be available in an eventual Switch port of Pokemon Emerald. The other Generation 3 Pokemon games have not been confirmed for Nintendo Switch at the time of this writing, though, so unless Nintendo has some surprise up its sleeve, it seems like Mew will be unobtainable in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen at launch on February 27.

As previously mentioned, the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Switch ports have been selling extremely well, and so it stands to reason that Nintendo may be tempted to bring the GBA versions of other Generation 3 Pokemon games to the Switch. No plans to that effect have actually been announced at the time of this writing, but that could be how Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen players eventually get Mew.

Even though the Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen Switch ports were announced a week in advance, perhaps more information on the games and the way to get Mew will be revealed during the big Pokemon Presents event on Pokemon Day. For the uninitiated, Pokemon Presents is taking place on Friday, February 27 at 6am PT. The show will feature all kinds of Pokemon announcements, and so it’s not out of the question that answers on how to get Mew will come during the show. Pokemon fans will just have to tune in to the Pokemon Presents even to find out more information on that front.
