Red Dead Redemption Could Be Getting a Fresh PS5 Release

Red Dead Redemption Could Be Getting a Fresh PS5 Release

Pre-orders for a Red Dead Redemption physical edition on PS5 have popped up on at least one site, suggesting a surprise new version could be coming. Much of the talk around Rockstar lately has revolved around the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, but the studio has been working on more than just that title. Rockstar is still updating the current-gen version of the original Red Dead Redemption, and now it seems there could be another treat in store for PS5 owners.

After multiple leaks and rumors had suggested as much, Red Dead Redemption got a current-gen release in December 2025. While the game was already playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X, this updated version brought updated graphics and performance on top of bringing the title to the Switch 2. It quickly proved popular, too, so it may not come as a huge surprise to hear that Rockstar has bigger plans in store for the game.

16 Years Later, Red Dead Redemption Still Feels Better Than Most Open-World Games

There have been plenty of open-world games released since the first Red Dead Redemption, but Rockstar’s western still beats a lot of them.

Red Dead Redemption PS5 Disc Version Spotted at Online Retailer

Fans have spotted a listing on the Spanish retailer Wakkap for an unannounced physical version of Red Dead Redemption on PS5. There doesn’t appear to be an Xbox edition on the site, and the Switch 2 only has a code-in-box version, though it’s unclear if Rockstar is only planning on a PS5 disc version for now or if Wakkap only has the inventory for this console. It’s also worth noting that Rockstar has not confirmed a physical edition is in the works, so this could be an error, but it’s not unusual for a retailer to get inventory of a product before it’s announced. After its digital release, the current-gen version of Red Dead Redemption shot to the top of Xbox and PlayStation charts, too, so a physical release would make sound financial sense for Rockstar.

According to the listing, Red Dead Redemption‘s disc version will release on May 7 for €32.90, or roughly $40 USD. That’s worth noting because the digital PS5-native edition of RDR is $50. While it’s unusual for a physical version to cost less than the digital, it isn’t completely unheard of, as Oblivion Remastered‘s disc version was $10 less than the digital when it launched. Of course, regional pricing differences could always take effect, so it’s too early to say if everyone will be able to get the same deal, but there’s a chance Rockstar could price it that way to encourage more sales.

If things are what they seem and RDR is getting a PS5-native physical version, it’s good news for fans. While physical game sales hit a record low in 2025, their decline has slowed slightly, and many gamers are outspoken about their preference for physical media. Even though digital releases have become the norm today, some people have reservations about their longevity or potential ownership implications. A disc release of the updated RDR would help satisfy that niche, whether fans of the franchise want it for preservation or just to save some internal storage.

While a physical release of the original Red Dead Redemption is something to get excited about, some fans are still holding on for the sequel to get the same treatment. It’s rumored that an enhanced edition of Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming later this year, but Rockstar has yet to confirm it. Regardless, there are big things in the works over at the studio, with an apparent new release of the original RDR coming up and the much-anticipated GTA 6 finally releasing in November.
