Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has addressed one of the biggest Leon S. Kennedy-related surprises in the game. Set 21 years after the events of Resident Evil 4, which was Leon’s last appearance, Resident Evil Requiem showcases how much Raccoon City and the rest of the franchise has changed throughout the years, from the gameplay to the universe at present time.
As one of two protagonists, Leon’s sections bring the high-octane action in Resident Evil Requiem with his breadth of combat experience. Longtime fans who’ve seen Leon grow since Resident Evil 2 appreciated how the game shows the change in his appearance and personality as he aged. Plus, how Resident Evil Requiem allowed players to discover Easter eggs to look back on Leon’s time as a rookie police officer.

Resident Evil Requiem Director Talks About Leon’s Ring
One of the biggest revelations in Resident Evil Requiem is the fact that Leon is wearing a wedding ring. It’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the game, but many players have spotted the ring and director Koshi Nakanishi has confirmed it as well. Naturally, players have speculated on Leon’s wife, mostly throwing around the possibility that he married Ada Wong. But Nakanishi clarified in an interview with DenFamicoGamer (translated by Genki_JPN on Twitter) that the ring was just meant to show how much Leon has changed as he got older. He added that it wasn’t intended to be a focal point in the story, knowing that many Resident Evil fans might focus on who Leon’s partner could be, which he thinks isn’t important in Requiem‘s bigger story.

Although the developers kept the identity of Leon’s partner a secret for now, many Resident Evil fans online have started to fixate on the detail. Apart from Ada, Claire Redfield, who Leon first worked with in Resident Evil 2, also popped up as a potential candidate. This further proves Nakanishi’s point of players only focusing on Leon’s marriage once they discover the wedding ring. On the plus side, many fans have shown so much love for Resident Evil Requiem‘s story and new characters Grace Ashcroft and Emily.
Meanwhile, in the same DenFamicoGamer interview, Nakanishi and producer Masato Kumazawa also explained why Ada wasn’t in Resident Evil Requiem. They said that while several character names came up during development, they felt that there weren’t any scenes where Ada’s presence was necessary. It’s a smart move since Resident Evil Requiem mostly focuses on Leon and Grace overcoming the latest outbreak and finding a cure with the Elpis serum. Of course, there’s still a possibility of Ada showing up again in future Resident Evil titles, especially if Leon starts becoming a regular fixture in the franchise like Chris Redfield.

Following Resident Evil Requiem‘s massive success, Capcom is currently working on the DLC expansion. Although the release date and details about the story are still unknown, the developer confirmed that Resident Evil Requiem will get a mini-game soon. It’s possible that the mini-game might be Mercenaries Mode, potentially featuring characters from Resident Evil Outbreak, like Grace’s mom Alyssa Ashcroft.
