Resident Evil Requiem Just Passed a Huge Milestone

A new press release from Resident Evil Requiem publisher Capcom reveals the latest entry in the franchise has officially sold over 5 million units since its launch on February 27. Not only has Resident Evil Requiem, which sees the triumphant return of Leon S. Kennedy alongside newcomer Grace Ashcroft, received worldwide acclaim from both players and critics, but it has now also become the fastest-selling entry in the series and has contributed to an impressive new sales figure for the franchise as a whole.

After shifting between action-packed entries like Resident Evil 5 and more horror-survival focused titles like Resident Evil 7, Capcom finally decided to combine the two genres in Resident Evil Requiem. After months of denying that Leon would return following a 14-year absence (not including remakes or spin-offs), a new trailer for Requiem finally confirmed the character’s comeback. Leon is one of two playable protagonists in the newest Resident Evil title, offering a stark difference in gameplay between the game’s secondary protagonist, Grace Ashcroft. While Leon offers an intense, action-filled style of gameplay that will see players mow through infected with ease, Grace is much more timid and experiences terrifying moments and plenty of intricate puzzles.

Resident Evil Requiem Surpasses 5 Million Units Sold

In a new press release, Capcom has announced that Resident Evil Requiem has surpassed 5 million units sold following its launch on February 27 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. This officially makes the latest entry in the series the fastest-selling one to date, beating the previous record holder, Resident Evil 6, which sold 4.5 million units in its first week. Capcom’s press release also provides fans with updated sales figures for the entire Resident Evil franchise, as the publisher says cumulative game sales since the first title in the series debuted in 1996 now exceed 183 million units.

This is just the latest impressive feat to be accomplished by Resident Evil Requiem, as Leon’s latest outing and return to Racoon City seems to have caught the attention of millions of gamers around the world. Although the figure is likely to fall as more reviews come in, Requiem is currently one of the highest user-rated Metacritic games of all-time, going toe-to-toe with last year’s Game of the Year winner, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Both titles hold a 9.5 user rating on the site, but with Requiem only having just over 7,000 user reviews, while Clair Obscur has over 24,000, there’s a strong chance that the latest Resident Evil‘s user score falls slightly in the coming weeks.

Still, it’s been a massive release for Capcom, as Resident Evil Requiem quickly blew up on Steam, becoming the series’ most popular release on the platform. While the previous record holder was 2023’s remake of Resident Evil 4, which peaked at just over 168,000 concurrent players on Steam, Requiem has absolutely smashed that figure. Just one day after the game’s release, Resident Evil Requiem peaked at more than 344,000 concurrent players on Steam.

With reviews for Resident Evil Requiem praising the title as one of the series’ best, it’s no surprise that it has shattered numerous records for the series. The title currently holds an overwhelmingly positive review score on Steam, with 96% of the 24,000+ reviews being positive. Fans have labelled Requiem as a “masterpiece,” with many adoring the shift in style between playing as Grace and Leon, the nostalgia trip that returning to Racoon City offers, and the ability to seamlessly switch between first and third-person perspectives.
