Say Goodbye to Original Sin 2’s Busted Armor System When Larian’s New Divinity Game Arrives

The new Divinity is set to feature a major change from past games in the franchise, with Larian Studios confirming that Divinity: Original Sin 2‘s magic armor will not return. The Baldur’s Gate 3 developer shocked the world at the 2025 Game Awards when the studio revealed that it will be returning to the Divinity franchise for its next game. Divinity was one of the most talked-about reveals from the presentation, owed in part to a cryptic teaser of a statue referred to as the Hellstone shared by The Game Awards’ official social media. Now, big changes are coming to the new Divinity.

While Larian Studios has yet to reveal much about the new Divinity, the developer has given fans some early hints about the game. Divinity is set to boast a brand-new game engine developed by Larian Studios, with co-op multiplayer supported in Divinity from the game’s launch. Larian Studios also revealed that, much like the studio’s past games, Divinity will receive an early access testing period for fans to try out the game, though an official release window was not given. Now, Divinity is confirmed to sport a big change to its armor from past games in the series.

Divinity Studio Larian Will “Refrain” From Using GenAI for Concept Art

Divinity and Baldur’s Gate 3 developer Larian Studios says it will not use generative AI for concept art as it faces criticism for its AI use.

Divinity is Dropping its Magic Armor System

A recent AMA from Larian Studios has shed some new light on one particular Divinity mechanic that will not return. Head of Design Nick Pechenin revealed that Divinity will not be bringing back the magic armor system featured in previous Divinity games, splitting damage between two types of armor. Pechenin teased new “ways to protect your character” allowing for more build diversity, while allowing players to use their “fun skills” earlier in combat. Pechenin also hinted at some new systems coming to the game, aimed at making it “harder to stunlock enemies” that will not be directly related to damaging them.

Divinity‘s armor split was a point of contention for many fans, with users in the replies of the comment being happy to see it leave. Divinity: Original Sin and Original Sin 2 feature two separate types of armor for players to break through before directly damaging an enemy, needing to deal with either physical or magical armor. The split of armor, mixed with only needing to break one or the other, often led players to build teams focused entirely on one specific type of damage. The changes to Divinity‘s armor are expected to allow players to better diversify their parties, bringing a mix of magic users and physical damage dealers.

Divinity Looks to Build on Baldur’s Gate 3’s Success

Larian Studios’ work on Divinity will likely benefit massively from the studio’s overwhelming success with Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian Studios has mentioned multiple ways it is looking to improve on its past work, including an even more robust character creation engine than Baldur’s Gate 3. The developer also hinted at some other mechanical changes from past Divinity games, including teasing a new “action economy” system and changes to its “character progression.” Larian Studios has yet to confirm an official release date for Divinity, though it is likely still a ways off.

As Larian Studios shifts its focus to Divinity, Baldur’s Gate 3 remains one of the biggest highlights of the 2020s for many fans. Larian Studios continued to release new updates to the game for nearly two years after its launch, officially debuting Baldur’s Gate 3‘s last free update in April 2025. Baldur’s Gate 3 even continues to add more accolades to its repertoire, winning “Best Community Support” at the 2025 Game Awards and “Labor of Love” at the 2025 Steam Awards. Baldur’s Gate 3‘s overwhelming success and popularity should bode well for the next big project from Larian Studios.
