Screenshots Reveal How Fable Reboot Locations Compare to Those in the Original Games

A new comparison has taken a look at how the locations in the upcoming Fable reboot compare to their equivalents in the original games. While gamers obviously can’t take a complete look at Albion in Fable just yet, the comparison is still an interesting glimpse into how the game world in the new reboot is shaping up so far.

The Fable reboot from Forza Horizon developer Playground Games is set to release later this year, bringing gamers back to Albion for the first new mainline game in the series in 16 years. The game was first announced back in 2020, and the marketing campaign has ramped up in recent months as it prepares for a release later this year. So far, everything seen from the game suggests that Fable will be faithful to Lionhead Studios’ previous titles in the series. There will be changes, of course – Playground Games has already confirmed that the iconic morality-based appearance system will not be present in the new Fable, for example. However, it is largely shaping up to be a Fable experience that long-time fans can immediately recognize.

Fable Has Brought Its Biggest Controversy to Rest, But It Shouldn’t Have Been an Issue in the First Place

Playground Games’ long-awaited Fable reboot just squashed one of the most enduring, absurd, frivolous gaming controversies of the last few years.

Fable Locations Compared To Original Games

A Reddit thread started by user lovelillith333 has taken a look at the new Fable‘s trailers and screenshots, and compared them to their equivalent locations found in the original games. Included in the comparison is a glimpse at some iconic locations from the franchise’s past, including Fairfax Castle, Bowerstone City, Bloodstone, and more. The older screenshots use images from all three mainline Fable games, and it’s an interesting look at how the series has evolved, and just how impressive the recreations are in the upcoming reboot.

What is perhaps most striking here is that, despite the obvious improvements in graphical technology, all of the locations still look like they belong in the same universe as those in the older games. It’s clear that the faithful Fable reboot is staying true to the broad visual aesthetic of the original games, while making use of how far graphics have come in the last 16 years. In the comparison images, the Bowerstone River is by far the most impressive. What was once just a bridge on a river now appears to have detailed buildings on top of it, which gives the area so much more life. Fairfax Castle is another very interesting comparison – the new version simply feels far grander in the reboot, although the shot from Fable 2 certainly has its own distinctive atmosphere.

Some in the thread pointed out the fact that the recreation isn’t 1:1, but did note that in this instance, it’s maybe for the better, as that “would look very dated.” Overall, the sentiment towards Playground Games’ work so far has been very positive, with one user claiming that the comparisons show “they understand the aesthetics and feel of Fable.” There was one slight complaint – atmosphere. “This post has made me think on how dreary the old games made the city look,” one user posted. “Hope the new one isn’t super sunny everywhere all the time and has dark foggy dreary either weather or locations.”

With Fable set to launch later in 2026, players can expect to see and hear plenty more about what to expect from the reboot as the year rolls on. The hope is that Fable can finally deliver on some of the older broken Peter Molyneux promises from the original games, while remaining faithful to what resonated so much with gamers in those titles.
