Silent Hill is On a Generational Run That Doesn’t Seem to Be Slowing Down

Being a Silent Hill fan over the past few years has felt like being transported 20 years back in time to the franchise’s peak. Not only has the Silent Hill series seen a remake of one of the franchise’s best entries, but a slate of brand-new games is releasing within just a few short years span as well, with last year’s Silent Hill f and the upcoming Silent Hill: Townfall. Between remakes and new entries, the Silent Hill series has been on a roll lately, it’s not showing any signs of stopping just yet.

For a while, it felt like Silent Hill was destined to be the franchise that time had forgotten. Despite being one of the seminal horror game franchises of the 90s and early 00s, Silent Hill really fell off the radar after the game the infamous P.T. demo was teasing was abruptly canceled by Konami. However, Silent Hill has now risen from the ashes like a phoenix a decade later to usher in a new golden era for the franchise that has a full head of steam to carry the series forward.

Most Exciting Things Confirmed For Silent Hill: Townfall

Silent Hill: Townfall’s most exciting features, including the CRTV and first-person combat, promise a thrilling new chapter for the legendary series.

Silent Hill: Townfall Will Mark the Third Release in 3 Years

  • Silent Hill 2 Remake — 2024
  • Silent Hill f — 2025
  • Silent Hill: Townfall — 2026

Beginning with Silent Hill 2 Remake in 2024, the franchise is on track to have three major game releases in three years. Bloober Team’s faithful adaptation of the original Silent Hill 2 put the series back on the map with its critical acclaim, and last year’s Silent Hill f brought an impressive new spin on the series with Ryukishi07’s distinct storytelling style and its Japanese setting marking a departure from the titular town. In 2026, the franchise is set to receive its third major entry in a row with Silent Hill: Townfall once again taking players to a new location for a completely different take on the series.

The Silent Hill Series Hasn’t Seen So Many Back-to-Back Yearly Releases Since 2009

  • Silent Hill — 1999
  • Silent Hill 2 —2001
  • Silent Hill 3 — 2003
  • Silent Hill 4: The Room — 2004
  • Silent Hill: The Arcade — 2007
  • Silent Hill: Orphan — 2007
  • Silent Hill: Origins — 2007
  • Silent Hill: The Escape — 2007
  • Silent Hill: Orphan 2 — 2008
  • Silent Hill: Homecoming — 2008
  • Silent Hill: Shattered Memories — 2009
  • Silent Hill: Orphan 3 — 2010
  • Silent Hill: Downpour — 2012
  • Silent Hill HD Collection — 2012
  • Silent Hill: Book of Memories — 2012
  • P.T. — 2014
  • Silent Hill: Ascension —2023
  • Silent Hill: The Short Message —2024
  • Silent Hill 2 Remake — 2024
  • Silent Hill f — 2025
  • Silent Hill: Townfall — 2026

The history of Silent Hill releases has seen some serious ups and downs over the years. After the original game was released in 1999, the series saw a new release every 1-2 years up until 2007. That year saw the release of Silent Hill: Origins for the PSP, along with several mobile spin-offs and an arcade cabinet release. For the next three years, Silent Hill saw a yearly mainline release, with Homecoming releasing in 2008 and Shattered Memories in 2009. Although a mobile spin-off was released in 2010, the next mainline Silent Hill game would release in 2012 with the critically-panned Downpour, which kicked off the franchise’s hiatus.

Although P.T. sparked hope for a Silent Hill revival in 2014, its swift cancelation and delisting from the PlayStation Store would cement the series as dead for the foreseeable future. Technically, 2023 was the start of Silent Hill‘s great revival with the release of Silent Hill: Ascension, an interactive horror TV series set in the franchise’s universe, but the first true new entry in the franchise wouldn’t release until 2024 with Silent Hill: The Short Message. Despite its mixed reviews and bite-sized story, The Short Message set the stage for the Silent Hill 2 Remake, which received heaps of praise from fans and acted as the true starting point for the series’s ongoing generational run.

Praise for Recent Silent Hill Games Proves This Generational Run is Legit

Despite having a larger volume of releases back in the 2007-2010 window, Silent Hill games released within that period still saw fairly mediocre review scores. Comparatively, Silent Hill 2 Remake and Silent Hill f are sitting at 87 and 86 OpenCritic review scores respectively. Additionally, Silent Hill 2 Remake was nominated for five awards at The Game Awards 2024, and Silent Hill f earned three nominations at The Game Awards 2025. While the jury is still out on how Silent Hill: Townfall will be received by fans and critics, the recent trend of acclaim the series has seen is a hopeful sign of continued praise.

The Silent Hill 1 Remake Can Continue This Trend

Beyond 2026, the future of the Silent Hill franchise is still unclear, aside from the Silent Hill 1 Remake that was confirmed to be in development by Bloober Team back in September 2025. It’s possible that this remake could be targeting a 2027 release date to keep this annual Silent Hill release trend going, but with Bloober Team also having just released Cronos: The New Dawn, it’s unclear just how far into development the Silent Hill 1 Remake is. However, this does paint a potential picture of how the series could roll out new releases going forward, using Bloober Team for remakes intermixed with brand-new releases from other studios like Silent Hill f developer NeoBards or Silent Hill: Townfall developer Screen Burn Interactive.

Silent Hill’s Future as a Series Has Never Been Brighter

What was considered a dead franchise just a few years ago is now back in full swing and achieving heights not seen in over 20 years. Depending on how Silent Hill: Townfall performs critically and commercially, Konami may have found the secret formula for success that can lead the Silent Hill franchise into a new golden era, even if it means moving away from the town of Silent Hill itself. It’s strange to say it, but 2026 is the best time to be a Silent Hill fan, and that’s not something that could have been predicted even five years ago.
