Slay the Spire 2 Players Have a Problem With the Latest Update

Slay the Spire 2, the roguelike deckbuilding title that’s taken Steam by storm, has released its newest update, and not every change it contains has been embraced by fans. First launched on March 5, 2026, Slay the Spire 2′s release was highly anticipating, even causing various other indie titles to reschedule their planned releases.

The original Slay the Spire title, launched in 2019, was wildly successful for developer Mega Crit, and is largely credited for popularizing the surging deckbuilder genre of games that has emerged since its release. The roguelike title featured four playable characters, each with their own unique deck of available cards to utilize. These cards serve as abilities, attacks, defensive maneuvers and more during the game’s turn-based combat, allowing players to build out their character in a way that suits their particular play style. The game’s sequel, which managed to surpass the player counts of popular roguelike titles like Hades 2 and Mewgenics upon release, introduces a pair of new playable characters to join the three returning members of the original game’s cast. The newest title also adds four-player co-op to the experience for the first time.

How to Use Slay the Spire 2 Console Commands

If you want to experiment with some fun stuff in Slay the Spire 2, here’s how you can enable cheats and other console commands.

Slay the Spire 2 Fans Aren’t Happy With Its Most Recent Update

The latest update to Slay the Spire 2 has just altered a variety of the smash-hit roguelike’s gameplay elements, and many fans aren’t pleased with the most drastic changes it’s introduced. The official patch notes for the update, which launched on March 19, referred to it as “the first BIG post-launch patch” for the game. The widespread changes introduced a handful of quality-of-life changes to the title, such as brand-new visual effects and a new Phobia mode aimed at curbing some of the game’s more jarring visuals, but there are also widespread balance tweaks that change will affect the entire Slay the Spire 2 experience for many players. The patch notes mention that the primary focus of the update is to try and prevent players from taking advantage of “infinites,” which are techniques that would previously let players extend their turns for a prolonged period of time. Some of these changes will have a profound effect on certain character’s play styles, with certain characters’ cards being outright nerfed, reducing their power and viability.

One of the most noteworthy changes involves the character The Silent, with their 0-cost “Prepared” card altered to a much less powerful “Prepare” variant. The new version of the card now costs 1 energy to use, and while it still discards two of the player’s cards, it now grants two energy on the next turn instead of sending two different cards to the player’s hand. The seemingly minor change has totally altered the way players approach The Silent’s deck. Other changes have nerfed characters like The Regent, reducing the viability of many of their cards. This article only covers a small selection of the widespread alterations that have taken place to the game behind-the-scenes. The changes have been so poorly received by a selection of players that the game endured a period of being review bombed. Although a high number of user reviews on Steam have since helped the game return to its Overwhelmingly Positive rating at the time of writing, the outcry has clearly been strong. A post on Reddit regarding the patch features a handful of frustrated users, with “R.I.P. Prepared” appearing as the most upvoted comment from user MultipleEggs. Another user, HAIDARA0619, emphasizes that the card is a “core card” for players of The Silent.

Players have struggled with many of Slay the Spire 2‘s new and returning characters, as the game introduces a host of new elements to contend with. The game is dynamic and difficult in a way that often proves exhilarating, but many fans feel that this latest patch takes away crucial abilities and skills that have helped mitigate some of that difficulty. While the game’s developers obviously aim to create a balanced experience that contains a fair bit of challenge, some players argue that the update removes key tools and techniques that have become fan-favorites in their quest to complete the game’s more difficult runs.

Slay the Spire 2 is currently in early access, with its full release still some time away. Player feedback is crucial to early access games, in order to strike the correct balance between a player-friendly experience and one that the developers feel is appropriately difficult. With so many direct lines of communication from the players to the game’s developers, time will tell which of these changes will hold and which will be rebalanced yet again to appeal to players’ hopes.
