Crimson Desert Lets You Get a Dog With Armor

Crimson Desert Lets You Get a Dog With Armor

Crimson Desert players have seized on an unexpectedly small launch discovery: the ability to outfit dogs in armor. The feature has been receiving notable social media attention since the game’s debut, helping shape the early buzz surrounding Crimson Desert.

The second game from Black Desert Online developer Pearl Abyss, Crimson Desert is an open-world action adventure set on the war-torn continent of Pywel. Originally conceived as a Black Desert Online prequel, it was eventually reworked into a standalone experience with its own unique lore. Crimson Desert officially released on March 19, debuting on the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. One of the features that the developer managed to keep under wraps until the last moment is a pet system. The functionality was first confirmed by Pearl Abyss America Director of Marketing and PR, Will Powers, in an early March 2026 interview with Brazilian YouTuber Patife.

Crimson Desert Review: A Remarkable Open World That Often Asks Too Much

Crimson Desert offers one of the most impressive worlds in gaming, but the deeper you go, the more it asks you to meet it on its own terms.

Crimson Desert Early Adopters Are Overjoyed with Armored Dogs

The scope of the system was not widely understood at the time, as underlined by the fact that fans are only now realizing Crimson Desert‘s dogs and other pets can be outfitted with gear, including bespoke armor pieces. The discovery has been making waves online for the past few days, with at least a few hundred early adopters taking to social media to share their delight in learning that they can get an armored dog to accompany them during their adventures across Pywel.

In the 24 hours after launch, one particular Reddit thread started by user Antique_Heron4450 has done much of the heavy lifting in raising awareness about dogs with armor being a thing in Crimson Desert. “Alright insta buy,” wrote one person in response to the post, while another one added, “no review needed. 11/10.” Reddit user Matt_37 offered a more direct endorsement, writing, “I’m not kidding, your post sealed my decision to purchase.”

Crimson Desert Dog Armor Is Purely Cosmetic

Pet armor and other wearable equipment are sold in shops throughout Crimson Desert‘s sprawling open world. They are purely cosmetic items that do not affect gameplay, largely because pets themselves are not combatants. Their main practical benefit is the ability to loot enemy corpses and destructible objects, a task they perform diligently, often while fighting is still ongoing. Beyond dress-up, Crimson Desert animals can be fed, petted, and even carried, provided they aren’t larger than a hog. Most of these interactions can be used, directly or indirectly, to raise an animal’s Trust meter, a key part of the game’s taming mechanic. Once the meter is maxed out, the protagonist automatically adopts the animal.

The breadth of these interactions reflects what early reviewers have identified as one of the game’s biggest strengths: a highly immersive open world that is more than mere set dressing and actively encourages exploration and experimentation. Initial fan reactions appear to broadly match the title’s early reviews. For instance, while pet armor has amused many players, the current buzz around the feature has also positioned it as a broader showcase of the game’s range. Some recent social media discussions thus frame the addition as evidence of the immense attention to detail that went into the making of Crimson Desert‘s vast open world.

The immediate popularity of Crimson Desert‘s pet system did not stop early adopters from asking for Pearl Abyss to expand on the feature even further. For instance, a vocal subset of fans are suggesting the South Korean developer adds an ability to name pets. Meanwhile, others have expressed a desire to see more pet outfits for both dogs and cats alike. Feline companions in Crimson Desert can wear boots and a hat in an apparent nod to Charles Perrault’s evergreen fairy tale Puss in Boots, but early impressions suggest their selection of miniature plate armor is tiny, with only one matching outfit currently known to exist.
