Gamers who are interested in buying a PlayStation 5 just got some bad news, as the price of two refurbished units have now increased. PlayStation 5 fans will have to shell out about $100 extra if they’re interested in buying most models of the refurbished console.
It’s not an easy time to be a gamer interested in buying a console or PC right now. AI data centers creating demand for parts has ensured that costs of components like RAM and CPUs have risen, increasing the price of everything from building a PC to purchasing consoles. So far, these trends show no signs of dying down, which may have led some players to consider buying used or refurbished systems. Unfortunately, though, even those are now more expensive, at least if one is interested in a Sony system.

Refurbished PlayStation 5 Prices Rise
As spotted on May 1, the cost of a refurbished PlayStation 5 Slim has now risen. Previously, one could acquire a refurbished PS5 Slim with a disc drive for $449.99, or a digital-only version for $399.99. These were at a considerable discount over buying the consoles brand-new, which made them enticing for players. Now, however, both have seen their prices increase by $100, bringing the disc PS5 Slim to $549.99, with the digital-only version selling for $499.99. Both units have a 1TB SSD, and ship with all the necessary cables, a single wireless DualSense controller, and a manual, but may have minor cosmetic imperfections.

While getting a refurbished PlayStation 5 is still less expensive than buying new, it’s not much of a comfort to those who are trying to game on a budget. Back in April, Sony raised the price of the PS5, with brand-new consoles costing $649.99 for a standard PS5 with a disc drive, a Digital Edition PS5 costing $599.99, and the PS5 Pro seeing its price increase to $899.99. These increases sting even more when taking into consideration that back in 2020, the PlayStation 5 launched at $499.99 with a disc drive, and $449.99 without it.
Thankfully, there is still one option that’s slightly more affordable and hasn’t yet been impacted by recent price increases. A refurbished original PS5 model with a disc drive is still available for $399.00. This makes it the most affordable version of the system by far, though it ships with 825GB of storage rather than the Slim’s 1TB. Gamers who have been putting off buying a system might want to pounce at this opportunity before it’s too late.

Sony has recently seen tremendous success with the PlayStation 5, with the console managing to outsell the newer Nintendo Switch 2 for much of 2026. PlayStation also experienced a spike in sales between the end of March and the beginning of April, though it’s believed this was due to consumers trying to purchase one before the price was set to increase. Now that the cost of both brand-new and refurbished units (sans refurbished original PS5 models) have seen their price go up, it will be interesting to see if Sony can maintain the trend of outselling its competitors.
