Someone Made a SNES-Like Version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and You Can Play it for Free

As Nintendo fans count down the days until the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Bellabel Park on March 26, PC players can finally enjoy their first experience with Super Mario Bros. Wonder, courtesy of a retro-looking SNES-style free-to-play browser version of the game. Super Mario Bros. Wonder originally released as a Nintendo Switch exclusive in October 2023, and while an enhanced edition with additional content is slated to launch for the Switch 2, PC audiences can instead enjoy a throwback experience with a fan-made online version of the critically acclaimed Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

The Super Mario Bros. franchise has delighted fans for decades, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the latest side-scrolling mainline entry in the longstanding series. Super Mario Bros. Wonder has been praised for its stunningly vibrant graphics, particularly during Wonder Flower segments, and many were delighted with the new power-up abilities introduced in the game. With a number of players excitedly waiting for the new Bellabel Park content coming with the Switch 2 Edition, others on PC are ready to jump into the world of Super Mario Bros. Wonder for the first time with an old-school twist on the recent heavy-hitter.

Some Switch 1 Owners Aren’t Happy About Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s Upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 Edition

Some Switch 1 owners are unhappy with the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, reflecting broader concerns over Nintendo’s product strategy.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder SNES Version Made by Fans is Free-to-Play in Browser

Itch.io game creator Shafox shared their incredible free browser version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder which not only features incredibly nostalgic SNES-era pixelated graphics but also includes classic sound effects and game-accurate music. Working as part of the Ninfox Team, Shafox partnered with artists deltonX3, SuperAlexMaker, Lmda, D3-03, Kaqdai, and Archwyvernlord to transform the familiar world and characters from Super Mario Bros. Wonder with a beloved retro aesthetic. Musicians bunten and eNDee McLean helped to bring the soundtrack of Wonder to the “demake” version of the game, while graphic designer and fellow developer golfinho assisted with converting the Super Mario Bros. Wonder logo from its modern Switch version to a SNES-looking reimagining. The Super Mario Bros. Wonder fan version on PC includes six playable levels, with the directional arrows, X, and C keys serving as the only needed controls.

In addition to adorable recreations of the Wonder Flower effects, the SNES-style Super Mario Bros. Wonder fan demake also includes a boss level where players can battle against Bowser Jr. Players can also find a variety of pixelated enemies like Goombas, power-ups including the Fire Flower, and Purple Flower Coins from Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Those that have tried out the browser edition of the Nintendo hit have applauded Shafox and the others who collaborated on the project, with some hoping to see a full-fledged SNES version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder released as a physical copy on a classic cartridge. A note on the free game page does tease that more levels will be on the way, so retro gaming fans who have enjoyed Super Mario Bros. Wonder on the Switch may want to stay tuned for any updates on additions to this fan-made SNES edition of the game.

Fans have shown time and again that they are more than happy to combine forces and reimagine their favorite games as either downscaled demakes or upscaled remakes, with a balanced appreciation between old-school graphics and modern visuals. The Super Mario Bros. Wonder SNES fan game is a perfect example of audiences wanting to combine the best of new and retro Nintendo releases, and it should come as no surprise that the Mario fandom is happy to see what Super Mario Bros. Wonder would have looked like it was released back during Nintendo’s big IP run through the 90s. Players can enjoy the SNES version of the game now and can experience Super Mario Bros Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Bellabel Park when it releases March 26.
