One concern surrounding PlayStation’s future is that its home consoles could begin to feel too similar to gaming PCs, especially now that Steam has entered the living room gaming market.
Lin Tao believes the shift toward digital media is already underway and extends beyond the gaming industry. She reaffirmed Sony’s decision to move away from physical PlayStation discs, arguing that the transition reflects the broader shift toward digital media as the preferred form of entertainment. Sony’s Q1 2026 earnings also support Tao’s claims, at least from a revenue standpoint, with the company reporting that more than 80% of its game sales were digital.

During Sony’s July 31 earnings call, CFO Lin Tao responded to a question comparing a digital-only PlayStation 6 to PC gaming. Tao said Sony does not view physical discs as a key differentiating factor. Instead, she argued that PlayStation consoles will continue to appeal to players through three main strengths: curated content, a stable gaming environment, and greater affordability than high-end gaming PCs. She concluded by saying Sony believes PlayStation and PC gaming can coexist peacefully.

Sony appears confident that PlayStation’s first-party AAA games will shield the business from any potential backlash or boycott by players opposed to its no-disc policy. Early in the earnings call, Lin Tao specifically named upcoming titles such as Marvel’s Wolverine and God of War Laufey as games expected to generate high profits, a point that often reassures shareholders.
Meanwhile, fans opposed an all-digital future for PlayStation with a petition, planning to cancel their subscriptions, and rallying behind the “No Disc, No Buy” movement, which encourages consumers to stop purchasing PlayStation products. Despite the backlash, Sony executives remain confident that phasing out physical discs will have no meaningful impact on the PlayStation business. Even so, Lin Tao said the company will continue its transition toward a fully digital ecosystem “cautiously.”
Sony’s Relationship with Retailers in a Digital-Only Ecosystem
When asked how ending physical discs would affect Sony’s relationship with retailers, Tao said the company has been selling PlayStation products for more than 30 years and continues to value its retail partners. She explained that selling digital game codes in physical boxes through retailers is one way Sony plans to maintain those relationships. That said, code-in-box releases have not been particularly popular, and games such as GTA 6 have already faced backlash over the format.
It remains to be seen how an all-digital PS6 will be received by the gaming community. That said, with the ongoing RAM shortage and rising component costs, Sony appears unlikely to launch a new home console anytime soon. For now, the company seems more focused on maintaining production of its current-generation console and preventing further price increases. Lin Tao commented on this by saying that Sony has secured enough components to continue production for the rest of the year, though future pricing and production changes remain uncertain.
