Sony Officially Comments on the PS6

Sony has commented on its upcoming PlayStation 6 console, which has yet to be unveiled at the time of this writing. Sony has had incredible success in the video game hardware market since the days of the original PlayStation, which trounced industry leader Nintendo and led to the best-selling console to date, the PlayStation 2.

The PlayStation 2 dominated its generation, and while the PS3 had a slow start, it could still be considered a big success in the long run. The PS4 was another success story, and PS5 sales are nearing 100 million units sold worldwide. PlayStation consoles consistently sell well, and so a PlayStation 6 is inevitable. Sony has yet to showcase the PS6 itself, but its president and CEO recently commented on the upcoming console.

Sony CEO Answers Question About the PS6

PlayStation 5 console sales spiked up in early April as customers chose to buy a new console before Sony increased prices across the board due to the rising costs of essential components.

Speaking at Sony’s latest earnings call, President and CEO Hiroki Totoki was asked about how the PlayStation 6 might be impacted by the ongoing memory crisis that is having a profound impact on hardware prices. Totoki responded by stating that Sony has yet to decide on when it will launch the PS6 or what it will cost. “We would like to really observe and follow the situation.” Totoki added that it will be considering “new potential ways to sell the PS6” depending on how things shake out. What exactly that means wasn’t clarified, but it will definitely be interesting to see what happens.

Video game hardware is seeing unprecedented price jumps as the result of RAM shortages and the general economic state of the world. The PS5 itself is now more expensive than ever before. A standard PS5 with a disc drive now costs $649.99 – a $150 increase from its launch price all the way back in 2020. The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, now retails for a staggering $899.99. Assuming the PS6 is more powerful than the PS5 and PS5 Pro, which stands to reason, one has to imagine that the new console is looking at a price north of $1,000 based on current market conditions.

Releasing such a wildly expensive console would probably not be in the best interests of Sony, and so it’s no surprise that a release date and price have yet to be decided. Still, the assumption is that the PS6 will launch in 2027, the same year as Xbox’s Project Helix console is expected to release. Other rumors indicate that the PS6 will also be releasing a handheld variant, or could even be a hybrid console ala the Nintendo Switch. Until Sony itself decides to share more information, though, all fans can do is speculate about the PS6 and what it will be bringing to the table.

Personally, I am hoping for a delay. Even though the PS5 is nearly six years old at this point, I still feel like it’s way too early for a new console generation. The COVID-19 pandemic had a big impact on the PS5 and kept it from hitting the ground running like it otherwise would have, so in many ways, it feels like this generation is just now truly hitting its stride. Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see how much the PS6 costs, and if consumers will be willing to pay that much for it.
