Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will permanently shut down this October, bringing an end to the free-to-play Final Fantasy game after roughly three years of service. While players still have a few months left to experience its story and ongoing events, the countdown to the game’s closure has officially begun.
Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis launched on mobile in September 2023 before arriving on Steam later that year, serving as both a retelling and an expansion of the broader Final Fantasy 7 universe. The game revisited multiple entries across the compilation—including Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus—while also introducing The First Soldier, an entirely new storyline exploring Sephiroth’s origins years before the events of the original game. As such, it quickly became one of Square Enix’s most ambitious mobile RPGs.
Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is Shutting Down
Square Enix has now confirmed that Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis will end service on October 6 at 11:00 PM PT (October 7 in some regions). The publisher said it made the decision after determining it would be difficult to continue providing the level of service players expect. Alongside the shutdown announcement, Square Enix immediately ended sales of the live-service mobile game’s premium Red Crystals, although players can continue spending any currency they already own until the servers go offline.

There is still a reason for existing players to stick around before the servers close. Square Enix confirmed that new in-game events and updates for Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis are planned right up until the end of service, giving fans a final opportunity to experience remaining content. Once the game shuts down, however, player account information will eventually be deleted as part of the closure process, and it will be completely inaccessible.
Square Enix has already made similar headlines this year with other major shutdowns, although in a very different form. Earlier this year, the publisher confirmed it would shut down the Nintendo Switch Cloud Versions of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, Kingdom Hearts 3 + ReMind, and the Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece, with all four becoming permanently unplayable on June 9, 2027. Unlike most shutdowns, these are primarily single-player games that players purchased outright, making the decision particularly controversial, but it’s because they are cloud versions being replaced by native versions. And while Square Enix is replacing them with native Switch versions at a discount for existing owners, it still means another group of Square Enix games is approaching a permanent end.

For now, players still have time to revisit Cloud’s story, explore The First Soldier and its expanded look at Sephiroth’s past, complete the remaining events, and spend any premium currency before the servers disappear forever. After October 6, another chapter in the Final Fantasy 7 franchise will officially come to an end, but there’s another to look forward to—Final Fantasy 7 Revelation releases in Spring 2027.
