The Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) version of Star Fox Adventures has a widescreen display option for players to utilize on their Switch 2 console. Star Fox Adventures is the 11th game added to the GameCube app since the Switch 2’s launch in June 2025.
Originally released in September 2002, Star Fox Adventures is the combined result of a canceled sequel to Star Fox 64.and a scrapped RPG called Dinosaur Planet. Along with traditional rail-shooter segments in the Arwing, Star Fox Adventures also has 3D action-adventure segments that see Fox McCloud and other characters fight enemy forces on foot. Star Fox Adventures was also the only title that Rare published on the GameCube, as the studio was acquired by Microsoft shortly after the game’s launch.
Star Fox Adventures Keeps Widescreen Display Support on Switch 2

During the September 9 Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo surprised fans by shadowdropping Star Fox Adventures on the GameCube app. However, Star Fox Adventures players need not play the game at a 4:3 resolution, as the game comes with widescreen support. This mode allows more areas of the screen to be displayed on the Switch 2 in both docked and handheld mode. Widescreen mode in Star Fox Adventures can be enabled upon starting up the game for the first time. This is done by selecting Star Fox Adventures from the GameCube app’s main menu, waiting for the game to load, then pressing Start when prompted. Next, players can press right on the control stick and select the options menu. Along with the option to turn controller rumble on and off, players can select standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9) display formats.

By selecting widescreen, this will get rid of the black bars on the sides of the screen and hide the Nintendo Switch Online user interface. Other options to change the game’s volume and supported languages are also included. Star Fox Adventures is not the only Nintendo Switch Online game with widescreen support, as games like Donkey Kong 64 and Soulcalibur 2 also have this option built into each respective title. Star Fox Adventures also includes support for different Switch 2 controllers, such as the Pro Controller and the NSO-exclusive GameCube controller.
Star Fox Adventures is the fourth GameCube title added to Nintendo Switch Online in 2026, arriving one month after Super Mario Sunshine landed on the service. Though 11 classic GameCube titles are now available for players to peruse, some games like Pokemon Colosseum and Super Smash Bros. Melee remain notably absent as of this writing. It remains to be seen when Nintendo will add more GameCube titles to the lineup.
Star Fox Adventures is not the only news that Star Fox fans received during the September 9 Nintendo Direct. Star Fox for the Switch 2 will receive a free update on September 29, which will add split-screen battle mode for up to four local players to enjoy. Additionally, up to four players can take part in online battles via the same Nintendo Switch 2 console.
