After plenty of rumors surrounding a potential PS5 release, Bethesda has officially revealed the next major wave of content coming to Starfield, including a massive free update and a new story expansion. GameRant recently attended a hands-off preview of both features at Bethesda Game Studios’ headquarters in Maryland, where lead creative producer Tim Lamb showcased Starfield‘s upcoming Free Lanes update and the Terran Armada DLC ahead of their official announcement.
Both Free Lanes and Terran Armada will arrive on April 7, the same day Starfield launches on PS5, bringing Bethesda’s sci-fi RPG to Sony’s console for the first time. According to Bethesda, the upcoming update represents the largest overhaul the game has received since launch, removing the barriers from space exploration while introducing new quests, enemies, mechanics, and rewards.

Starfield’s Free Lanes Update Opens Up Space Travel
The centerpiece of the update is, without a doubt, Free Lanes—a new system that allows players to manually travel between planets within a star system instead of relying entirely on fast travel. Using a new cruise-style flight mode, players can now move freely through space, with the chance to encounter random events like derelict ships, hostile encounters, and other discoveries across Starfield‘s Settled Systems.

During the preview event, Starfield lead creative producer Tim Lamb explained that the system was created in response to one of the most common requests from players at launch. “Since day one, one of the biggest pieces of feedback we heard was, ‘I really want to travel inside a system. I want to see what’s out there, in between the planets.'” The end goal wasn’t just to remove the shackles, though, but to ensure that any freedom that offered also resulted in fresh encounters players had never seen before.
“Going out there to explore the Free Lanes,” Lamb explained, “there was nothing there before. Most of our space encounters were around planets. So, it was about making a system that delivers that content to you out there, but we didn’t want it to be content you’ve seen before.” As a result, while flying through Free Lanes, players may encounter events organically, ultimately making exploration between planets less about the destination and more about the journey.
The Free Lanes update comes free for all players. All existing Premium Edition owners on Xbox and Steam will receive the Terran Armada DLC at no additional cost.
According to Bethesda, Free Lanes also adds new dungeons to Starfield, points of interest, recruitable crew members, and even a new land vehicle called the Moon Jumper that must be found before it’s unlocked. A new progression system called X-Tech is being added as well, which allows players to upgrade weapons, ship modules, and other gear using a new resource discovered during exploration.
Players can use X-Tech to modify legendary weapon traits and further customize their builds. Lamb described the system as a way to give players greater control over their equipment. “Once you get the weapon you want,” he said, “you can come in and put the icing on the cake.” Other additions in the update include new enemy modifiers, expanded outpost features like cross-outpost storage, a new Milliewhale pet, and the ability for Starborn players to carry a limited number of items into Starfield‘s New Game Plus.
Terran Armada DLC Brings a New Enemy Threat
Alongside the Free Lanes update, Bethesda also revealed Terran Armada, a new story expansion for Starfield that introduces a powerful robotic faction invading the Settled Systems. The DLC features a new questline that sends players across multiple locations while confronting the Armada’s forces. These incursions involve large-scale missions where players infiltrate massive enemy ships, battle new enemy types with special modifiers, and disable technology that prevents grav-jump travel in nearby space.
The expansion adds new characters, enemies, weapons, armor sets, ship parts, and companions for Starfield all tied to the invading faction. But according to Lamb, Terran Armada was designed to challenge players in new ways, and that’s where enemy modifiers come in. “It wasn’t just about making the player more powerful. It was about making some enemies more challenging too.”
The name “Terran Armada” had previously appeared in a cryptic teaser from Bethesda in 2025, hinting at the title of the game’s next major expansion.
With Free Lanes, Terran Armada, and the PS5 launch of Starfield all arriving together on April 7, it’s certainly going to be a big day for the sci-fi RPG. The Free Lanes update takes exploration, progression, and customization to the next level, while the Terran Armada DLC adds a brand-new storyline and a dangerous new enemy faction to Starfield. For both new players arriving on PS5 and longtime explorers returning to the Settled Systems, the Free Lanes update and Terran Armada DLC are poised to deliver the most complete version of Starfield yet.
