Stop Killing Games has published a new post subtitled “A Story of Lies,” outlining a timeline of recent events surrounding the movement and how they may relate to PlayStation‘s decision to discontinue discs. The community-backed movement began in 2024 after Ubisoft shut down The Crew, but it has since become a major force in gamer-led efforts to protect consumer rights, including the ongoing controversy surrounding PlayStation’s no-disc policy.
Stop Killing Games managed to collect over a million verified signatures for its petition, prompting EU commissioners to raise the issue in Parliament. However, according to the movement’s official statement, a lobbying group representing major game developers, including Ubisoft, allegedly convinced the EU to reject Stop Killing Games’ proposal.
SKG Calls Out Sony for Retiring the ‘Only Thing Left to Protect’ Gamers’ Ownership Rights
On July 27, the Stop Killing Games movement’s Twitter account proposed four possible reasons why PlayStation is moving away from physical discs. According to its official statement, Sony “doesn’t want resales.” It also claims the company is trying to prevent “unidentified use” of its games and opposes “true ownership” because it limits Sony’s control over the market. Finally, SKG argues that Sony is abandoning discs because it doesn’t want modding, as user-generated content can replace paid DLC.

The new SKG statement ends with a bold message: “They want to take away our rights, scam us out of our money, and undo achievements that go back as far as the French Revolution.” But it also reveals that the movement has more surprises planned for its supporters and that it has been working with DoesItPlay?, another advocate for gamers’ ownership rights that has also conducted extensive research on PlayStation discs.

Another notable detail about SKG’s recent social media posts is the official Twitter account’s use of the hashtag “No Disc, No Buy.” The term has recently become the slogan of gamers who oppose PlayStation’s all-digital future, and it urges others to boycott Sony’s games. So, it wouldn’t be inaccurate to say that the Stop Killing Games movement supports the idea of a boycott. And it remains to be seen how this stance will affect the PlayStation user base in the future.
So far, most of the industry’s biggest names and major companies have remained silent on PlayStation’s policy change. That silence has fueled rumors that Sony imposed strict new rules preventing its partners from commenting on PlayStation discs. One of the few industry veterans to publicly support gamers was Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser, who said, “If people want [a physical disc], I think companies should provide it.” That said, Rockstar’s own upcoming Grand Theft Auto game has already abandoned physical discs and will launch as a code in a box.
