When analysts suggested that a new Witcher 3 expansion could be on the cards for 2026, fans of the franchise were taken by surprise, with an equal mix of excitement and doubt spreading throughout the community. Now, this Witcher 3 expansion has gone from a possibility to seeming all-but-confirmed thanks to an earnings call.
The original leak, as highlighted by PCGamesN, came from Borys Niespielak, a trusted insider who covers the Polish video game industry. He claimed that Fool’s Theory would be developing a Witcher 3 expansion alongside its Witcher 1 remake. While interesting, it wasn’t quite enough to get fans’ hopes up, which is why follow-up comments from analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski last month were such a big deal. Chrzanowski corroborated the idea that this Witcher 3 DLC could really happen, even going so far as to suggest a $30 price point and May release window for the content. And now, fans have the next best thing to an official announcement.
Per Eurogamer, not only did an e-mail exchange with original leaker Boris Niespielak see him adding that several sources have verified the expansion’s existence, but he pointed to a rather telling CD Projekt Red earning’s call as well. Per CD Projekt Red’s own words, “there is a chance that new content hinted upon in recent calls and reports may see release in the coming year.” While the studio is being playful, and not directly stating that it’s talking about a Witcher 3 expansion, that’s almost certainly the content that it’s referring to. Following this discovery, it’s very hard to challenge the idea that the DLC is real, even if it wasn’t unveiled at The Game Awards 2025 like many expected.
When asked by Eurogamer for comments on the earnings call quote, CD Projekt Red gave its usual response about not commenting on rumor or speculation.
The Witcher 3’s Third Expansion Feels Real, and Expectations Will Be Daunting
Though an expansion for a decade-old game may seem odd on paper, it’s not unheard of for the gaming industry. One prominent example of this approach working was seen with the Borderlands franchise years ago. Despite Borderlands 2 being seven years old at the time of its release (and not having received new content for a few years prior to this drop), Gearbox created Commander Lilith and the Fight For Sanctuary. This expansion tied up some loose plot threads and set the stage for Borderlands 3, with Gearbox even making it free for a time to get the maximum amount of eyes on its product.
Essentially, though this rumored Witcher 3 expansion would be paid, it’s also a clever form of advertising that gets gamers hyped for what’s next. With Witcher 3 having long legs and continuing to sell copies long after its debut, the potential audience for this expansion is huge. There are, admittedly, some big questions that will have to be answered, but a DLC for what’s considered by many to be one of the best video games of all time is going to be a big deal no matter when it releases. Said questions include:
- Will Fool’s Theory be able to create an expansion on par with CD Projekt Red’s beloved Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine?
- With CD Projekt Red shifting fully to Unreal Engine 5, will going back to the Red engine for this bonus expansion cause any hiccups?
- Will the expansion focus on Ciri? This seems likely given that she’s the main character in the new Witcher trilogy, and another Geralt story could risk damaging his brilliant sendoff.
For now, The Witcher fans will have to wait until the expansion’s official announcement to see just how big this DLC is going to be. While it’s not officially confirmed just yet, there’s a whole lot of smoke to the fire, and it would be a memorable way to set the stage for Ciri’s next adventure.
