The Outer Worlds (the Obsidian RPG, not the time-loop game with a spaceship I never learned how to fly properly) is preparing for a major update a whopping seven years after its initial launch, and that update includes grenades.
In a news post to Steam, Obsidian announced it would be pushing some small upgrades to The Outer Worlds today via the Spacer’s Choice edition of the game. These upgrades are broken down in detail here, but they include stuff like typo fixes, bug fixes, preventing players from getting stuck in tight spaces, some framerate fixes, and things of that nature.
However, an even bigger update is on the way. Obsidian says that on May 27th it will push an even bigger patch that will include “performance fixes, lighting changes, a host of other quest and gameplay fixes.” It will also include the addition of grenades, which are present in The Outer Worlds 2 but not in the original.
At the same time on May 27, Obsidian will delist the current base game of The Outer Worlds from storefronts, leaving the Spacer’s Choice edition as the only way to purchase the game going forward. Those who still own the base game will keep it, but they will also be offered the Spacer’s Choice Edition for free on all platforms, and Spacer’s Choice will also be getting a price drop from $60 to $40 at that time.
All of that is true on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series, but things will work a little differently for folks on Xbox One and PS4. In order to receive the upgrade on those platforms, players must also own both The Outer Worlds DLCs. However, the paid upgrade path is being removed, and the DLCs are getting permanent discounts too, so it should be both cheaper and easier to upgrade if you want.
So, hey, neat! The Outer Worlds is a pretty cool action RPG with a genuinely interesting cast that includes my best bud Parvati and some solid anti-establishment snark. Its sequel, The Outer Worlds 2, came out last October to solid critical reviews but a somewhat muted response from players, with sales weak enough to reportedly squash chances of a third game.
I also want to give a hearty congrats to this guy in particular:
Glad you got your grenades finally! Good luck!
