The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is now the No. 1 movie globally after surpassing a giant movie from China. Nintendo’s animated movie has now grossed $752 million globally, which puts it ahead of the previous No. 1 movie, Pegasus 3 ($641 million).
The Chinese movie was released in February in China, and if you’ve never heard of it, that makes sense. It’s made 99.8% of its money from the Chinese market, with only $1.37 million from the US.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, meanwhile, has made money in most major markets globally, including $358.7 million from North America alone. Some of the movie’s top international markets include Mexico ($49.6 million), the United Kingdom ($38 million), Germany ($30 million), Spain ($17.4 million), and France ($12.7 million).
Pegasus 3, meanwhile, earned $638.5 million from China alone, making up more than 99% of its total box office receipts. The next highest is North America ($1.37 million), but Pegasus 3 did not make $1 million or more in any other market globally, according to official box office data.
The No. 3 movie globally for 2026 so far is Amazon’s Project Hail Mary, which has earned $575 million worldwide so far. There are numerous other heavy-hitters coming later this year, including Avengers: Doomsday, Toy Story 5, Spider-Man: Brave New World, Minions & Monsters, and The Odyssey.
Like 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie did not get great reviews from professional critics, though audience scores were much better. Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and a producer on the movies, said he was baffled by the low critic scores for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Nintendo’s next movie is 2027’s The Legend of Zelda, which the company produced in partnership with Sony Pictures. After that, more movies are expected to follow, as Nintendo has said it is aiming to have a steady flow of films based on its games.
In other Nintendo news, Circana’s latest data showed that in the US, the Switch 2 remains the top-selling console for 2026 so far in terms of units sold and dollars.
