Tomodachi Life Fans Think An Update Made Miis Hate Each Other

Tomodachi Life Fans Think An Update Made Miis Hate Each Other

After Nintendo released Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream last month, fans of the life sim series were split. Some praised the game’s endless customization and control, while others (like me) grew frustrated with having too much power. In the original Tomodachi Life, Miis were truly in control rather than the player, so existing in a world where Miis rarely fought and everything went perfectly just felt wrong.

Earlier this month, Nintendo patched the game with Version 1.0.2, which was packed with mostly minor bug fixes. But players instantly fixated on the patch notes’ vague final bullet point, which read, “Other issues were fixed to improve the gameplay experience.” While players in other games might consider something like that a throwaway note, Tomodachi Life players saw it and instantly grew paranoid.

It turns out that a lot of players have noticed that their Miis are fighting more often and forming relationships less often, and I’m inclined to agree that this isn’t a coincidence. I only witnessed a single fight in my 30 hours of pre-patch gameplay. I played for just a few hours after the patch, and I’ve already seen several fights. What I haven’t seen at all is a Mii asking to become friends or move in with another Mii.

Quite a few players have shared their frustrations with the change, implying that it’s an issue that Nintendo needs to fix and suggesting that it’s even “ruining” their islands:

tomodachi patch has managed to ruin not 1, not 2, not 3, but 7 different relationships on my island. like i understand the people wanted “enhanced gameplay” but holy shit??! literally bout to start logging in just to check the shops and marketplace until they fix this pic.twitter.com/nddkMdYn5M

However, there’s still a camp of players holding their ground and saying that they appreciate the presumed change.

“I enjoy the slow progression, it’s a cozy game. I think if I got a call every day I logged in I’d get annoyed,” one Reddit commenter wrote, referring to how Miis call players to announce that they’ve had a baby. “It’s a nice surprise.”

I was genuinely excited to see more conflict on my island when I picked the game back up earlier this week, but it does feel like there might be a bit too much. Maaaaaybe there needs to be a bit of a balance. Just maybe! But I dread the idea of Nintendo dialing it back too much and returning entirely to the bland wish-fulfillment simulator that Living the Dream was at launch, so I’m content with my argumentative Miis for now, I guess.
