Upcoming Sci-fi RPG Exodus Reveals First-Look at Combat and Exploration Gameplay

Exodus, an upcoming Sci-Fi action-RPG, has just revealed its first proper look at combat and exploration gameplay. Exodus was first announced during the 2023 Game Awards, where its first trailer gained a great deal of attention due to its Interstellar-like time dilation themes and the inclusion of Matthew McConaughey.

As well as a memorable debut trailer, Exodus immediately stood out due to the studio that’s working on it. Though this is Archetype Entertainment’s very first project as a unit, many individuals working under the new banner have extensive experience in the video game industry. Head of studio James Ohlen, for instance, is a former BioWare veteran who’s worked on Mass Effect, Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and more. Ohlen also works alongside Drew Karpyshyn and Chad Robertson at Archetype, another two former BioWare vets.

Around two years after its initial reveal, and three months after its last major appearance at the 2025 Game Awards, Archetype Entertainment has returned to the spotlight to deliver a new look at Exodus, its ambitious Sci-Fi action-RPG that will see players travel across the Omega Centauri cluster in search of mysterious relics that could significantly impact the galaxy’s political climate. This most recent reveal gives fans their very first uninterrupted look at Exodus‘ combat and exploration gameplay.

This Exodus first-look trailer opens with player-character Jun and companions Tom and Elise engaging in a firefight with unknown mechanical soldiers. This combat sequence will look immediately familiar to Mass Effect fans, with the player issuing commands to their AI companions while they themselves engage in third-person, cover-based shooter action. The next portion of Exodus‘ latest trailer focuses on one of the game’s primary forms of traversal, the Railclaw. This grappling hook item will let players quickly zip to new parts of the environment and swing from specific grappling points using a physics-based movement system. The final portion of the trailer teases the ancient relics that are at the heart of Exodus‘ story, showing the player-character entering an ancient Celestial shrine.

According to the trailer’s official description, the gameplay shown in this Exodus first-look is still very much a work-in-progress, and that it “represents just a small window” of what fans can expect to see this summer when Archetype Entertainment will deliver a “longer” extended gameplay reveal for Exodus. It’s unconfirmed when this extended gameplay reveal will take place, but there’s a chance it could appear at the Geoff Keighley-hosted Summer Game Fest, which is set to begin on June 5, 2026, or a similar event this summer.

Exodus currently has a target release window of early 2027, which means it’ll likely be at least a year until players get their hands on the full experience. That said, the universe of Exodus has already received a surprising amount of build-up. Back in September 2024, a prequel novel written by Peter F. Hamilton with the title Exodus: The Archimedes Engine was released. This novel details the origin of the Celestials. A sequel, Exodus: The Helium Sea, is set to release in June. The world of Exodus was also briefly explored in the 11th episode of the Amazon Prime show Secret Level. This standalone anthology episode followed a mechanic trying to chase his daughter across the galaxy, showing directly the consequences of spaceflight’s time dilation.
