An extended Xbox outage yesterday hit every part of the service, preventing players from accessing their digital games. It was the latest bleak reminder of how little control you have over the gaming ecosystem you invest hundreds of dollars in. Microsoft has now swung into damage control mode to try to explain what happened and how it plans to improve things ahead of the full launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved today.
“Earlier today, many players began experiencing issues with sign in, enumerating their game libraries and playing games,” Xbox chief technology officer Scott Van Vliet wrote on X last night. “The team has worked hard throughout the day to fix the issue, and we’ve restored service as of 2:30 PM PDT. Nonetheless, this is an unacceptable situation, and we must do better to support you.”
Van Vliet previously worked in the cloud AI part of Microsoft and was named CTO earlier this year as part of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s shakeup of the gaming division’s leadership team. His unusual level of transparency about the situation on social media is part of Xbox’s new strategy to communicate more frequently and directly with fans, whether that’s about 3,200 layoffs or a gap in Xbox service.

So what exactly was the cause of the latest network outage? Van Vliet blamed a licensing service that Xbox relies on to authenticate game permissions which belongs to a different part of Microsoft. “This caused some sign-in scenarios to fail, and it caused many scenarios that require an entitlement check to also fail, such as listing out your Full Library and launching games that you own,” he explained. “It also affected several of our publishing and store partners who depend on those same systems which is why some of you saw issues in specific games and not others.”
The CTO said that his team caught signs of the issue right away and immediately started diverting traffic to parts of the system that were still working, which resulted in some players getting full service back before others. Xbox is now doing a “full post-incident review” to figure out how to avoid system failures like this in the future.
“I care less about the one-line root cause and more about the real questions: why a failure in one service was able to take down this much, why recovery took as long as it did, and what we change so a single point of failure can’t ruin your night again,” Van Vliet wrote. “That means hardening the dependencies underneath sign in and game launch, improving how we detect and contain this class of failure, and being faster and clearer with you when something breaks.”
Xbox wasn’t the only console maker to face network issues this month. Last week, a PSN outage led to similar issues on PlayStation 5. It became a fresh data point for the pitfalls of all-digital gaming among the many fans criticizing Sony over its upcoming move away from discs. The message in both instances has been pretty straightforward: you are not in control of your digital gaming ecosystem. So far, neither company has offered a plan to fix that.
