Xbox Executive Responds to ‘Rare’ Backward Compatibility Issues

Xbox Executive Responds to ‘Rare’ Backward Compatibility Issues

The VP of Xbox has responded to gamers impacted by recent Xbox Backward Compatibility program problems. The message sent has given some Xbox gamers hope that the issue will be resolved soon, but some remain frustrated at how the issue is being addressed and about difficulties in getting in contact with those who are trying to help.

The problem with Xbox Backwards Compatibility is impacting those who want to play Xbox 360 games on the current generation of Xbox Series X/S consoles. The Xbox Backward Compatibility program has been praised and appreciated by many gamers over the years, but some are now saying that they haven’t been able to access their older games for weeks or even months on Xbox.

Xbox is Hosting a New Helix Console Event Next Week

A new Xbox event will take place next week, offering new information about the successor to Xbox Series X/S, codenamed Project Helix.

Xbox VP Responds to Backward Compatibility Problems

On April 22, Xbox initially announced that it was aware that some gamers were unable to access their compatible Xbox 360 games on Xbox Series X, with Xbox VP Jason Ronald following that with his own message on April 28. The VP confirmed that the team is looking into the issue, saying that a “small number” of Xbox owners are impacted by an error that indicates that the console can’t connect to Xbox Live when trying to boot up select Xbox 360 games. Ronald specifically requested that impacted gamers send him a direct message on Twitter, so the team could collect more information and investigate.

While some gamers seem relieved that the issue is being taken seriously, others are still extremely frustrated. A few quickly pointed out that they can’t send messages via DM to Ronald unless he follows them back, as it’s otherwise restricted to X Pro members. However, Ronald got back to some of those who commented with these complaints and sent direct messages to them himself. To others, he noted that the team had received a lot of data already and would be investigating, and that he’d reach out if they still needed more details.

While it’s good to see an Xbox exec taking the situation seriously and working to get the problem resolved, players who haven’t been able to access their Xbox 360 games for weeks or more are understandably annoyed. Unfortunately, this situation is happening at the same time that Xbox is trying to find its footing. At the start of the year, it was reported that Xbox hardware sales revenue fell 25%, while the “This is an Xbox” marketing strategy managed to frustrate gamers and developers alike. The company is also reevaluating its exclusivity strategy, with a recent study indicating that exclusives play a huge role in which console gamers choose to purchase.

The last thing Xbox needs is for its current roster of customers to be frustrated that a popular feature isn’t working correctly. To make matters even more problematic for the company, it seems that it’s largely new Xbox Series X/S owners who are having this problem. Now that Xbox has openly addressed the matter, with some luck, all gamers on the Xbox family of consoles will be able to revisit Xbox classics again soon without further headaches.
