WWE 2K Battlegrounds, an arcade fighting game that was first released in 2020 to mixed-to-negative reviews, is shutting down forever later this year. WWE 2K Battlegrounds was developed by Saber Interactive Spain and published by 2K, releasing across PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and even Google Stadia back in the day.
After years of relative success, 2K published the disastrous WWE 2K20 in 2019. The reaction to WWE 2K20 was so intensely negative that it effectively put the franchise on ice. Instead of releasing WWE 2K21 the following year, 2K decided to give the next main series entry a longer development cycle to ensure a higher-quality product. So while there was no new main series WWE 2K game in 2020, there was WWE 2K Battlegrounds available to help fill the gap.
Why WWE 2K26 Leaving Last-Gen Consoles Out to Dry is a Good Thing
2K Games has now confirmed that WWE 2K26 is fully embracing current gen consoles, and the game will be better because of this.
Whereas the main series WWE 2K games go for more of a simulator style, WWE 2K Battlegrounds is cartoony and over-the-top, with outlandish arenas and absurd attacks. While some praised it for its quirky charm, others criticized it as being fairly shallow. Regardless of WWE 2K Battlegrounds‘ mixed-to-negative reviews, it’s sad that the game is going to be shut down later this year. For those interested in revisiting its online modes while they still can, WWE 2K Battlegrounds is shutting down on July 9, 2026. From that point forward, WWE 2K Battlegrounds‘ online features will cease to exist. But that’s not the only bad news.

When is the WWE 2K Battlegrounds ServerShutdown Date?
Not only is WWE 2K Battlegrounds‘ online servers shutting down, but the game is actually going to be delisted from digital storefronts. Anyone interested in adding WWE 2K Battlegrounds to their digital libraries will need to purchase the game by February 20. After that, the digital version will be completely unavailable, though physical copies exist. You will retain access to WWE 2K Battlegrounds after it’s delisted if you decide to buy it, but keep in mind that its online features will indeed be shut down on July 9.
WWE 2K Battlegrounds is far from the only WWE 2K game shut down by publisher 2K. Most of the WWE 2K games had their online features shut down long ago, with each game’s online having a fairly short shelf life. In fact, the latest WWE 2K games, WWE 2K24 and WWE 2K25, have already confirmed when their online features will be shut down.
Other WWE 2K Games Are Also on the Chopping Block
According to the latest information, WWE 2K24 servers are shutting down on March 31, 2026. WWE 2K25 servers will then shut down on March 31, 2027, so a year later. Now, it’s entirely possible that these dates will change, as 2K has been known to extend online functionality on occasion, but fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. Considering how much more popular the main series WWE 2K games are and their much bigger focus on online play, those servers shutting down will likely hit most WWE fans harder than Battlegrounds‘ servers biting the dust, but it’s always a bummer whenever any game is shut down.
On the bright side, WWE 2K fans will have a new game to play in the very near future. WWE 2K26 is set to launch on March 13 and will feature a CM Punk-themed Showcase Mode, upgrades to various other game modes, an updated roster, new match types, and more. Of course, WWE 2K26 will likely follow in the footsteps of other WWE video games published by 2K and likely will be shut down within a few years of its release, and so fans should definitely keep that in mind.
