The FPS genre loves to unleash punishment upon willing subjects, leaving us reeling on the floor while screaming, “How did he hit me from there?!?” PvP titles like Apex Legends aren’t the focus here, as the hardest FPS games are single-player and want you to suffer alone. While most games balance things out with a relatively doable “normal” difficulty, not all of them show such kindness, and “completing” a game means beating everything.
Do you consider yourself a god gamer? Want to put your skills to the ultimate test? Ready to stare into the abyss to see what fires back? Then pick up these shooters, jump to their highest level, and prepare yourself for a grueling battle. The road to completion is defined by one-hit kills, super-intelligent AI, and endless replays, all in the hopes of accomplishing the impossible.
The intro explains it, but I’m only including FPS games you can complete but are absurdly difficult. No broken titles that are literally impossible to 100% finish, as that isn’t a very interesting direction to take this article.
Also, I’m not talking about getting all Platinum trophies or Achievements. This is about beating a game at its hardest, without mods.
Devil Daggers Makes 500 Seconds Feel Like A Lifetime
Testing The Limits Of Humanity
- “Completing” the game means surviving for 8 minutes and 33 seconds. Technically, the game goes on indefinitely, but you need to last for 500 seconds to get its single achievement.
Devil Daggers is probably the hardest FPS game of all time, and it doesn’t hide that challenge behind higher levels. Looking like a retro arena shooter, the concept is simple: survive. Playing as a hand and dropped onto a pitch-black platform that gradually shrinks, you fire infinite magic daggers at an avalanche of skulls and other enemies. No story, campaign, barely any vision, and no safety net as you die with a single hit. Have fun.
When you start a playthrough, you might initially think, “ah, this doesn’t seem that hard,” a sentiment that disappears within about 30 seconds. By the one-minute mark, you will be dead and restarting another run, and it will take you quite a while to move past that point. Once you reach 4 minutes, Devil Daggers finally really gets going, unleashing a relentless barrage of game overs that will haunt your nightmares.
Honestly, I Think I’d Rather Just Join A Doomsday Cult

- “Extra Crispy” difficulty cements Blood as the hardest classic shooter of all time. Mind you, the game’s standard setting already packs a punch.
- The two remasters also preserve “Extra Crispy,” and there’s even a popular mod for Refreshed Supply.
’90s FPS games were built different, in the sense that most of them used the same few engines. Blood is the crowning achievement of 3D Realms’ Build Engine, a legendary shooter that combines horror elements with a tongue-in-cheek tone. You play as Caleb, who takes on a dark god’s cult while armed with all sorts of creative weapons, including voodoo dolls.
Even on normal, Blood makes sure to push players to their limits, being even harder than some games at their worst. When played on “Extra Crispy,” as Tchernobog intended, the AI goes from “kind of unfair but mostly OK” to “come on, what was that!” real quick, both in terms of their reaction times and damage output. You can make no mistakes and still die in seconds.
Halo 2 LASO Is Too Much For Even Master Chief
- Legendary All Skulls On means no HUD, almost no checkpoints, way more aggressive enemies, and shields that only recharge through melee attacks.
Due to its popularity, Halo 2 on LASO has likely been attempted way more than any other game in this article; consequently, it has caused the most scars. The broken “Legendary” difficulty qualifies Bungie’s game for this discussion on its own, but it might as well be easy mode when compared to LASO, which activates every single Skull.
LASO goes beyond simply being “hard,” as it completely goes against any concept of fair design, turning every enemy into a powerhouse who operates on Master Chief’s level in the lore. The Blind Skull removes your HUD, crosshair, shield bar, and weapon model, while Assassins makes every enemy except Flood Infection forms invisible. Those are just two Skulls, and they already make Halo 2 near-impossible to complete.

Alien Resurrection Does Justice By The Xenomorphs
There Will Be Acid Blood
- Technically, the game has gotten easier over the years, largely thanks to its innovative control scheme becoming the standard for the FPS genre. Alien Resurrection is still near-unbeatable, though.
One of the first console shooters to use the left stick to move and the right stick to look, Alien Resurrection forced players to learn a new system, which made it seem harder at the time. As we know now, this control scheme is pitch-perfect for shooters and the standard for controllers; consequently, a new player in 2026 might fare better than somebody trying it out in 2000.
However, that doesn’t amount to much when faced with Xenomorphs that blend into the darkness and Facehuggers that kill you instantly. Alien Resurrection is part of the survival horror genre, and also one of its hardest representatives. The game plays like a slow-paced shooter while using survival horror resources, meaning you could easily find yourself soft-locked due to simply running out of ammo.
Cruelty Squad Eradicates Every Ounce Of Hope
Cursed To Die
- Sometimes, you don’t realize you sealed your fate.
Oh, things are getting surreal now. Cruelty Squad is closer to something like Deus Ex than a traditional shooter, acting as an immersive sim set in a nightmarish dystopian hellscape where human life has lost all value. The game’s difficulty changes during a playthrough rather than being fixed, and the shift can be triggered in multiple ways, be it by dying, going through specific doors, or carrying cursed items.
Although it can be avoided relatively easily if you know what you are doing, you can deliberately or accidentally find yourself playing on “Hope Eradicated,” which very much lives up to its name. At this level, health shrinks while levels have extra targets and harder enemies who will detect you far quicker. “Hope Eradicated” changes Cruelty Squad from an immersive sim to a punishing trick-shooter that demands tactical perfection and exploit manipulation.
Lovely Planet Makes You See Stars
Don’t Be Fooled By The Vibes

- Never miss, never get hit, and do it quick.
Pastel colors, cute enemy designs, simple weapons, and upbeat music; Lovely Planet just seems like a lovely time, pun completely intended. Then you die in a single hit and realize you have been lulled into a false sense of comfort. With 100 levels across 5 worlds, Lovely Planet asks you to be perfect for very short bursts, and you really need to be perfect to earn all three stars in each level.
Now, to be honest, if your goal is just to reach the end of each level, you will eventually get there, as only a handful of levels make that accomplishment seem impossible. However, collecting all three stars means reaching the end while killing all enemies, beating the target time, and finishing with perfect accuracy.
Project I.G.I. Forces You To Cross Hell
No Mistakes For A Long Time

I went back and forth on whether to include Project I.G.I.: I’m Going In or I.G.I.-2: Covert Strike, as they both test the player’s patience and break their spirits. Ultimately, I picked the first since it caught more people off-guard at the time of its release. An ancestor of realistic tactical shooters, Project I.G.I. drops you into a large sandbox (for its era) with no checkpoints and respawning guards, some of whom aced their sniper training.
With long missions that can take around 45 minutes to complete, a single mistake means having to restart from scratch, and errors are easy to come by. Anyone who played the game will never forget the sheer horror that is “Border Crossing,” a massive map covered in minefields and patrolled by a helicopter. Personally, I didn’t manage to complete this level when I played the game about 20 years ago, and I have no desire to right that wrong.
